Fill the waterpots

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus *said to Him, “They have no wine.” “And Jesus *said to her, “What business do you have with Me, woman? My hour has not yet come.” His mother *said to the servants, “Whatever He tells you, do it.”Now there were six stone waterpots standing there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing two or three measures each. “Jesus *said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim. And He *said to them, “Draw some out now and take it to the “headwaiter.” And they took it to him. Now when the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter *called the groom, and *said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the guests are drunk, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now. This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and revealed His glory; and His disciples believed in Him. John 2:1-11 (NASB)

An everyday, ordinary event. An everyday problem. A potential embarrassment for a family. A potential stigma. A potential label. This and maybe more was the implicit message Mary gave to Jesus, with four words: “They have no wine.”

The response is so full, so amazing, so vivid. The reverberations are so unbelievable. His words: “Fill the waterpots with water.” – Do your part -. Use what you have in the way it needs to be used, and I will do the rest. I will meet your needs in a way you may not have imagined. I will transform your ordinary natural state into a supernatural and extraordinary one. Just obey. Follow my instructions. Use the resources at hand in their natural way.

I am amazed by the beauty of Jesus’ words. Simply stated, he said, “Do!” The servants obeyed in a way that showed surrender. “So they filled them up to the brim.” Not to the top, to the brim. To the right point of overflow. To not miss the command, or a “just in case”, let us do more. Let us have a mindset that will let it be perfectly clear that it is filled. An abundance mindset. To the brim. In other words, we will do our part, as you have commanded to the most extreme. To the fullest extent of our ability. To the brim!

Let us live that way, shall we? To the fullest. To the brim. Filling the world up by emptying ourselves. To become “to the brim fillers”. Not concerned by what will come out of our actions, but what we are pouring in. A full effort. A conscious act that is fully aware of being obedient, rather than of receiving.

He cannot make wine until we fill the waterpots with water. We do the small things as if they were big things, and Jesus will do the big things as if they were small things. Sometimes the waterpots aren’t filled with water, because we don’t have any. But they are filled with tears. They are filled with prayers because it is the only thing we have to offer. It is our brimming worship. We are told to fill it with water, but all we have to fill it with is a heart that longs for that water to refresh it. Sometimes all we have is a sigh. Fill the waterpots with what you have and fill them to the brim. You will then hear those indescribable, soothing, and healing words saying to you, “Draw some out now…”

I want to hear those words.

The drawing out will be the best wine you have ever tasted!

Fill the waterpots!
