Process

By DP

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

This is a concept, that in itself sounds pretty dry to our ears. It actually feels sometimes like a car brake; we think it is slowing us down. Talking about process makes us feel pain even when we haven’t gone through it or even started.

We are inspired by the stories that evoke human achievement. The ones that portray an underdog that emerges triumphant. Or the ones where an immense injustice has been done, and that it is ultimately redeemed. We all have heard of them. Men and women like Rosa Parks that took a stand that started a civil rights movement. Eric Liddle, who won the Olympic Games in a race he had not trained for, after refusing to run on a day he regarded as sacred to his beliefs. Joseph, that was promoted to second in command right out from the dungeons. What about king David, that had to run for years after he was anointed as king, walking with a bunch of rejects as his army. We could mention hundreds of known and unknown stories that rekindle the spark of creativity, courage and tenacity in us. They have many things in common, but the one that we often oversee, is process.

To get to that tipping point, to be equipped with the necessary tools for the task at hand, they all underwent a process that gave them the capacity and the character to perform and transform the situation they were in. Creation itself, underwent a transformation that took time. Such is life, a process. The mere growth and transformation that takes place in the womb of a woman, and the time it takes for the child to develop to term and ultimate birth, is a process. When that stage ends, a new one starts. And what a wonderful metaphor to use for describing process.

It is also true for you. It could be that you’re in the early stages of your situation and see no reason why you are in the middle of an unending drama that consumes every single second of your thought life. An injustice is taking place and you cannot see the way out or the reasoning for it. It makes it hard to understand that great dreams are building up inside of you, but your reality is just so different and everything screams at you to kill those dreams. It might be so personal, that great pain is what you only know as a way of living. But would you consider a different stance? Would you give yourself a new opportunity? It might be the process that God is using to reshape your thinking, your character and your attitude, so when the time comes, it will exude the greatness for what you have been created.

So don’t reject process, embrace it, let it teach you. Look at it from another angle, because all things are meant for good for those who love God. And I grant you that I do not know what your situation is, how hard or complicated it is. But process is not our enemy, it might be our ally and maybe you can then see your current job, your family situation, a business deal, the place you live, your pain, from a different perspective and not be bitter, but grateful.

And always remember that God loves you and we should see our situation through God’s eyes, and not God through our situation. Because it could just be the one thing that will change your life; process.

Run your race

“This isn’t about going back. This is about life being ahead of you and you run at it. Because you never know how far you can go unless you run.” – Helen Bates “Penny” Chenery Tweedy (bred and raced Secretariat)

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.” – Romans 12:1

The one who sows

wpid-sower3-2011-06-12-06-011.jpgby DP

Then He spoke many things to them in parables, saying: “Behold, a sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them. Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth. But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them. But others fell on good ground and yielded a crop: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 9 He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” – Matthew 13:3-8

It was very early in the morning. This was the moment he had dreaded the entire week. He was pacing around the room, rehearsing, thinking, doubting, hoping, expecting. A myriad of emotions rushing in his head and in his heart. How will he approach the subject? Will it be well accepted? Was he convinced of what he was about to say?

And then he remembered the parable, where the seed had fallen in different types of soil, and had different results at the end. And the thought came to his mind, what if the soil wasn’t the only variable here? Nor the seed? What if the sower had a crucial part in the story. And his heart rested, the seed, the message that he was going to deliver was solid. He had to be sure that the messenger, the sower, not the seed, was iron clad too.

There are many occasions where we fail to understand the importance of the message or task we are about to deliver, that we don’t take good care of it. In the parable, it was a qualified person. The story says he was a sower. He knew what he was doing, he had experience, he had done this task before. He also knew where would the seed have the best results. So why did he threw it alongside the road, over stony places or under thorns? Was he being careless?

Without undermining or neglecting the many teachings Jesus conveyed with this parable, we should all consider this and understand that we need to communicate well. We need to know the setting that we are in and be assertive with our words. It is an important message, but it might be the wrong soil, the wrong place or the wrong time.

Back to our friend in the beginning of this post. With the understanding of this principle, he went into the meeting and he scouted the field. When he spotted good soil, he delivered the all important message. The message that would transform his life.

It doesn’t matter where you carry out your calling, be prepared and be mindful of the field you have been given. It might not be the seed, nor the soil, but it could be the one who sows.

Graduation day

by DP

“And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.” – Revelation 22:12

It was quite a different feeling altogether. I had walked the entire day before, searching for the clothes he would wear. We got the tie, the shirt, the pants, the shoes, (He actually wanted to use sneakers!) and the usual haircut. A day of shopping around, a great day of hanging out with my son. (Ah, and less money in my pocket!)

The day came and we headed out to the graduation ceremony. It was a great moment, and also a moment of deep thoughts and emotions. Emotions got to high level when a slideshow was presented with the students pictures. My son had selected a picture to be displayed from his early school days and then his current photo was shown. I just can’t quite put in words what I felt that moment. Joy, hope, a myriad of feelings that day (and an occasional tear bothering my eyes!). One thing was certain, I hoped for greater things for my son and felt very proud of him.

This day was the culmination and the beginning of two seasons. The culmination of years of studying and learning and the beginning of a season of new experiences, challenges, and victories, and yes, more studying and learning. The graduation was the recognition of the work that was done years before. While sitting there, it also made me reflect about life, about my wife, my son, my daughter, and myself. And I realized that we all will stand before our God one day, we will be called by our name and receive the reward of what we have done in this life. That day is not the day to get prepared. On that day there is nothing that can be done to get a medal or recognition. That day is graduation, reward day.

As I felt that day, I was and I am, proud of my son, will God feel the same about you on that day? If you’re not sure, it is not too late to you turn your heart to Him and amend your ways. He has promised to hear you and receive you. He has made all that needs to be made in order for you and I to be reconciled with Him. We all have sinned and we all have a past, and we all have a future if we want to. – “Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future” Craig Groeschel

You and I will receive the reward according to our work, for what we did with our lives. Make it a rewarding one. The day will come and it will be, graduation day.

Two weeks and a day

It was another Sunday, o so I thought. I can’t remember the date, but I can remember the scene. I opened the door of the church and everything stopped. There she was, full of life, full of joy and looking stunningly beautiful, doing what she has done all her life, singing with passion to her Master. I do remember my thought at that moment, I said to myself, “She must be married. I mean, what man in his right mind would not pursue a woman like this.” And then I asked for the president of the youth of the church, and yes you are right, it was her. As I talked to her, her smile captivated me. I had seen my dream and the pursuit for her heart began that day. And as I realized, this had not been just another Sunday.

It has been 15 years today since we got married. It has been an amazing ride, sometimes bumpy, sometimes smooth. It has been 15 years of laughter, of tears of joy, years full of hope and full of dreams. And today we look into the future with expectation, with confidence and with boldness that for our time remaining on this earth, we will make it, the best time of our lives.

Time has gone very fast, that is why to me it hasn’t been 15 years, it’s more like two weeks and a day. And as I look at you, as I hear you, as I love you, I pray that God may give us many more years, to laugh, to dream, and to love.

I love you Sandy, Happy Anniversary Baby!

The Masters hand

by DP

“The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the LORD’s favor has come.” Luke 4:18-19

There is a song written by Wayne Watson called the The touch of the Masters hand. It depicts an auction of which the last one to be sold was an old violin. Even the expert auctioneer didn’t find much worth in it by it’s appearance and started off the auction at one dollar. When the bids had come to three dollars and the auction was about to close, a gray haired man stood up from the back and walked to the front. He picked up the violin, brushed the dust from it. He adjusted the strings, picked up the bow and started to play. What came out from that violin, was music that not even angels could sing.

Then the auction resumed. The auctioneer started it’s cry and said, “One thousand dollars, two thousand dollars, three thousand dollars”. When the auction finished, the people asked, what changed it’s worth? And the auctioneer said, “It was the touch of the Masters hand”.

Like that old violin, your might feel shunned and forgotten. People might look at you and find no worth, no significance and no future. They might even label you, and limit you by what they see. It is hard, it is tough and it is taking a toll on you. But if you decide to give yourself the opportunity, you will find that the Master is watching intently. If you let Him, he will clean your life and adjust your soul. The sound that will be heard, will show that the Master’s hand has been upon you. And the sound will be melodious.

Open your heart, lift up your eyes, you will see the Master walking towards you wanting to restore you. And anything He touches, is changed. And anything He touches, is made worthy and extraordinary. He came to release the captives, free the oppressed and to heal the sick. This is no ordinary hand, it is the Master’s hand.

A hope and a future

by DP

“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” – Jeremiah 29:11

In the movie, Narnia, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Reepicheep a little mouse, tells Eustace, the boy converted to dragon, that his current state was happening to him, so he could fulfill his destiny; “Extraordinary things only happen to extraordinary people. Maybe it’s a sign that you have an extraordinary destiny. Something greater than you can have ever imagined.” he said. His countenance was not feeling that extraordinary at that time, but he ultimately saved the day.

We all have situations that don’t make sense and our days start to come too slow and seem to end without a hope in hand. But it might be that these things are not happening to you, but more likely they are happening for you. In the midst of the storm, the conflict, and the uncertainty, it is only natural that you will feel uneasy, but this moment in time could be the your defining moment. It can break you or you can choose to break it. You can choose to learn and to grow. You can choose to despair or to hope.

I know, it is easier said than done. But in reality what is the alternative? You can choose to stay where you are and not take hold of God’s promises in your life. You can choose not to forgive, to live in the past and not realign your way of thinking. What will happen is that days will become weeks, weeks will become months and months will become years and you will be in the same place you are today. And If you get the epiphany, to the point that you realize that time has gone by, you will then see that you have just repeated one day, one week, one month or one year, many times over.

But that is not God’s plan for your life. He wants you to thrive and to become all that he has planted in your life for you to become. Those dreams, visions, ideas will come forth and change your life and all of those around you. He wants you to achieve your full potential. A life full of hope, a life filled with His love, direction and purpose. It’s your choice today; make it happen.

God’s plans for your life are good. He has given you a hope and a future.
