Cut or prune

“I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.” – John 15:1–4

This passage brings forth many teachings that will enrich the life of any human being. Here, Jesus was talking to his disciples about the importance of the relationship with the Father and with Him. He stressed the invaluable principle that relationships play in everyday life. And he makes very clear in the following passages that without a relationship with Him, the works of men, would be temporary.

But it is very interesting that he makes a distinction between cutting and pruning, and rightfully so. When you cut off a branch it is displaced completely, it is severed. All nutrients, water, and everything that gave it life are gone. It is discarded as not being part of the grapevine any longer. No effort, no energy will be spent in order to maintain, to nurture or give life to this branch. Likewise there are some relationships that need to be severed in our lives. Relationships that only take from us our energy, time, and resources, and we never see any fruit. These are relationships that never add to your life, they only take. They don’t celebrate you, they criticize you. These are relationships that need to be cut.

But when you prune the grapevine, it might appear that you are also cutting it since you are making its appearance lest abundant. But in reality what pruning does is that it creates capacity and space so it can grow ever bigger. The same way happens with us. Sometimes we have to prune some areas of our lives. Not to sever them but to create capacity, to make space in order to grow and be fruitful. Be it relationships or at work, sometimes less is more. The space created by the events that prune your environment, will translate into focus, and fruitfulness.

In each case, your actions will lead you to a better place in your life. And when we remain in Him, the True Grapevine, we will bear much fruit and our lives and those around us will benefit from it. So what will it be, to cut or to prune?

Cortar o podar

Yo soy la vid verdadera, y mi Padre es el labrador. Él corta de mí toda rama que no produce fruto y poda las ramas que sí dan fruto, para que den aún más. Ustedes ya han sido podados y purificados por el mensaje que les di. Permanezcan en mí, y yo permaneceré en ustedes. Pues una rama no puede producir fruto si la cortan de la vid, y ustedes tampoco pueden ser fructíferos a menos que permanezcan en mí. – Juan 15:1-4

Este pasaje trae consigo muchas enseñanzas que enriquecen la vida de cualquier ser humano. Aquí, Jesús estaba hablando a sus discípulos sobre la importancia de la relación con el Padre y con Él. Hizo hincapié en el principio invaluable que juegan las relaciones en la vida cotidiana. Y hace muy claro en los pasajes siguientes que sin una relación con Él, las obras de los hombres, serán temporeras.

Pero es muy interesante cuando hace una distinción entre cortar y podar, y con razón. Al cortar una rama se desplaza por completo, se separa. Todos los nutrientes, el agua, y todo lo que le dio vida se ha ido. Se descarta por ya no ser parte de la vid. Ningún esfuerzo, ninguna energía se gastará para mantener, alimentar o dar vida a esta rama. Asimismo hay algunas relaciones que deben ser separadas de nuestras vidas. Relaciones que sólo toman de nosotros nuestra energía, tiempo y recursos, y nunca vemos ningún fruto. Estas son relaciones que nunca añaden a tu vida, sólo toman. No te celebran, te critican. Estas son las relaciones que deben ser cortadas.

Pero cuando se poda la vid, podría parecer que se está también cortando porque su apariencia se ve menos abundante. Pero la realidad es que al podarla se está creando capacidad y espacio para que pueda crecer aun más grande. De la misma manera sucede con nosotros. A veces tenemos que podar algunas áreas de nuestras vidas. No para separar, sino para crear capacidad, para hacer espacio para crecer y ser fructíferos. Ya sea que se trate de relaciones o en el trabajo, a veces, menos es más. El espacio que crea los acontecimientos que podan tu entorno, se traducirá en enfoque y productividad.

En cada caso, tus acciones te llevarán a un lugar mejor en tu vida. Y cuando permanecemos en Él, la Vid Verdadera, llevaremos mucho fruto y nuestras vidas y los que nos rodean se beneficiarán de ello. Entonces, ¿qué será, cortar o podar?
