Don’t be anxious

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. – Philippians 4:6

Restlessness: That feeling of asphyxiating anxiety that seems not to end. Marked by a lack of quiet, repose, or rest; Not able to rest, relax, or be still. It is an overwhelming feeling that takes over your entire body and mental functions and seems to overpower every inch of our being. It happens, sometimes more than we want to admit. And in silence we are prisoners of our own thoughts and an easy prey to our circumstances. We need structure, guidance and wisdom.

Paul, had his share of these feelings. At the time of writing this letter to the Philippians, he was in house arrest for two years. A situation that limited his mobility, his contact with the world and to the naked eye, the influence he could have. But from there he wrote this letter where he instilled among other things the importance of being cool, calm, and collected and changed the world. He clearly stated, Do not be anxious about anything, and anything means anything.

One might say, yeah it’s easier said than done, but Paul was talking about his own experience and sharing with the Philippians the way to overcome. We are presented with many choices every day. Sometimes choices that are imposed upon us and we must decide. The counsel is that in every situation we should present them in prayer and with thanksgiving to our God. We are reminded that, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” , so our trust should remain in His promises.

And it all comes down precisely to that, trust. We can easily be distracted by what surrounds and by what happens to us daily. The unexpected phone call, or reaction, a poor choice of words, and many other exogenous events that tend to rattle our trust in God’s promises. So when you are presented again with anxiety, restlessness and you start to feel overpowered, remember the words said the Paul; Do not be anxious about anything and remember that God’s plans for your life are good and bright and wonderful. Jesus made it clear that he had overcame every situation for us and that nothing would harm us.

Every situation has the capacity to promote you to a better place. Be cool, calm and collected, trust God and don’t be anxious.

No estés ansioso

No se inquieten por nada; más bien, en toda ocasión, con oración y ruego, presenten sus peticiones a Dios y denle gracias. – Filipenses 4:6

Intranquilidad: Esa sensación de ansiedad asfixiante que parece no terminar. Marcada por una falta de tranquilidad, reposo o descanso, no poder descansar, relajarse o estar quieto. Es una sensación abrumadora que se hace cargo de todo el cuerpo y funciones mentales y parece dominar cada pulgada de nuestro ser. Sucede, a veces más de lo que quisiéramos admitir. Y en silencio somos prisioneros de nuestros propios pensamientos y presa fácil de nuestras circunstancias. Necesitamos estructura, orientación y sabiduría.

Pablo, tuvo su parte de estos sentimientos. Al momento de escribir esta carta a los Filipenses, él estaba en arresto domiciliario cerca de dos años. Una situación que limitaba su movilidad, su contacto con el mundo y para el ojo humano, la influencia que pudiera tener. Pero desde allí escribió esta carta en la que inculcó entre otras cosas, la importancia de estar calmados, tranquilos y serenos y de esa manera cambió al mundo. Dijo claramente: No se inquieten por nada, y nada significa nada.

Uno podría decir, que es más fácil decirlo que hacerlo, pero Pablo estaba hablando de su propia experiencia y compartiendo con los Filipenses la manera de vencer. Se nos presentan muchas opciones todos los días. A veces las opciones nos son impuestas y nosotros debemos decidir. El consejo es que en cualquier situación debe presentarlas en oración y con acción de gracias a nuestro Dios. Se nos recuerda que, “Ahora bien, sabemos que Dios dispone todas las cosas para el bien de quienes lo aman, los que han sido llamados de acuerdo con su propósito.”, por lo que nuestra confianza debe permanecer en sus promesas.

Y todo se reduce precisamente a eso, confianza. Es fácil dejarse distraer por lo que nos rodea y por lo que nos pasa todos los días. Esa llamada inesperada o reacción, una pobre elección de palabras, y muchos otros eventos exógenos que suelen hacer mover nuestra confianza en las promesas de Dios. Por eso, cuando se te presente nuevamente la ansiedad, inquietud y comiences a sentirte abrumado, recuerda las palabras que dijo Pablo; No se inquieten por nada y recuerda que los planes de Dios para tu vida son buenos y brillantes y maravillosos. Jesús dijo claramente que había superado todas las situaciones por nosotros y que nada nos haría daño.

Cada situación tiene la capacidad para promovernos a un mejor lugar. Mantente calmado, tranquilo y sereno, confía en Dios y no estés ansioso.

Leave the waterpot

The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,… – John 4:28

Much has been written and said about this encounter between Jesus and the samaritan woman at the water-well. A woman that had a religious belief, evidenced by her declaration of where worship should take place. But what was evidently clear, was the thirst she had in her life. Her past and her present were a constant reminder of it. And in this scene we see her being asked for some water by the same One that could quench the thirst of her soul and change the direction of her life.

Her mind was referencing a different kind of life. She was using her current status, her current thirst, her current lack, to interpret the words that Jesus was speaking into her life. If she only knew, who was speaking to her! But after this encounter her eyes were opened and her life was changed. She had been confronted with the truth and had been loved at the same time. She had been seeking for love in many places and from many men, to be left every time thirsty and unloved. But today this was different. The way she satisfied her thirst was new to her. That day she left at the well, her old way of fulfilling her thirst, of fulfilling her soul. She left the waterpot. She left her old ways when she was confronted with the Water of Life.

You might be in a moment of life where you are tired of trying and trying many different ways of fulfilling your soul. You are tired of the same situation, you are tired of the struggle, of realizing that being religious does not satisfy your deep desire for relationship; a relationship with God. When we realize that what we need is more, we leave our old ways of fulfilling our needs. We need to open our hearts and surrender it to God.

The call to action today is not a religious ceremony, nor a penitence to show your devotion, but a step of surrender. A conscious action of leaving the ways that you relied upon to fill your soul. An act of leaving the waterpot you have been carrying all of your life. You won’t need it anymore. So today, leave it at the well and go on with a new direction.

No more thirst, no more emptiness, no more despair nor sorrow. Leave the waterpot of empty promises for the The Water of Life that will fill your waterless soul with unending love. Leave the waterpot.

Deja el cántaro

Entonces la mujer dejó su cántaro, y fue a la ciudad, y dijo a los hombres:… – Juan 4:28

Mucho se ha escrito y dicho acerca de este encuentro entre Jesús y la mujer samaritana junto al pozo de agua. Una mujer que tenía creencias religiosas como lo demuestra su declaración de dónde la adoración debía realizarse. Pero lo que evidentemente era claro, era la sed que tenía en su vida. Su pasado y su presente eran un recordatorio constante de la misma. Y en esta escena vemos que el Único que podía saciar la sed de su alma y cambiar el rumbo de su vida le está pidiendo un poco de agua.

Su mente hacía referencia a una vida diferente. Estaba usando su estado actual, su sed actual, su carencia actual para interpretar las palabras que Jesús le estaba hablando a su vida. ¡Si ella supiera quién estaba hablando con ella! Pero luego de este encuentro sus ojos se abrieron, y su vida cambió. La verdad y el amor la confrontaron al mismo tiempo. Ella había estado buscando el amor en muchos lugares y a través de muchos hombres, para quedar cada vez más sedienta y con falta de amor. Pero hoy esto era diferente. La forma en que satisfizo su sed era nueva para ella. Ese día dejó en el pozo su antigua forma de satisfacer su sed, de satisfacer su alma. Ella dejó allí el cántaro. Dejó su vieja manera de vivir cuando el Agua de Vida la confrontó.

Podrías estar en un momento de la vida en que estás cansado ​​de tratar y tratar muchas formas diferentes de satisfacer tu alma. Estás cansado de la misma situación, estás cansado de la lucha, de darte cuenta de que ser religioso no satisface tu profundo deseo de relación; relación con Dios. Cuando nos damos cuenta que lo que necesitamos es más, dejamos nuestras viejas formas de satisfacer nuestras necesidades. Tenemos que abrir el corazón y rendirlo a Dios.

Hoy el llamado a la acción no es una ceremonia religiosa, ni una penitencia para mostrar tu devoción, sino un paso de rendición. Es una acción consciente de dejar las maneras en que se confiabas para llenar tu alma. Es un acción de dejar el cántaro que has estado llevando toda tu vida. No lo necesitas más. Así que hoy, déjalo en el pozo, y sigue con una nueva dirección.

No más sed, no más vacío, no más desesperación, ni más dolor. Cambia el cántaro de promesas vacías por el El Agua de Vida que llenará tu alma sedienta con el amor interminable. Deja el cántaro.

Change

“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” – Matthew 24:35

Jesus made a clear statement that all that was around us, everything that we might know, would change. Our relationships, our place of work, people, circumstances, health, all would and will change. This was said to us so when it came, it wouldn’t take us by surprise, he was saying, expect it to happen.

So why we complain so much when things don’t go our way or stay the same as we know them? We like all that is predictable, we like all that is safe. Our nature gravitates to that kind of place. We tend to like places or circumstances that in our mind we sense or feel that we have control over them. And when that is taken from us, it disrupts our peace, our joy, and our sense of security. We forget that control is merely an illusion. Matt Chandler said it best when his battle with cancer started, “When the illusion of control disappears we become men and women of prayer”. We are reminded that all we know will change and we no control over it.

But Jesus made yet another more significant statement in this sentence. His words would not pass, change nor move. The contrast here was apparent to all. He was saying, that the reality of life would show us that it would be constantly changing, but the reality of Him, would assure us that he would never change, move, or pass. Everything that he said would be solid, unmovable, dependable, for every stage or circumstance of life.

But change is not necessarily bad. We tend to see change from a negative perspective. Change can be good, change can be helpful, even when it might be hurtful. Change can thrust us to another level and develop in us the character needed to fulfill our God given purpose. Because what is now, is not working. Because the status quo is not good. It is how we view change that’s important.

Jesus knew that very well and did something about it. With his sacrifice in the cross, Jesus made sure that change became permanent. He had conquered sin, death and fear. Not a mere superficial change, but a change to the core. He became change, he made us forgiven, redeemed, and transformed.

The entire story of the Bible is all about change. Change for good, for love and for life. Trust in his word that will never pass, that will never move or will never change. Embrace change.

Cambio

“El cielo y la tierra pasarán, pero mis palabras no pasarán.” – Mateo 24:35

Jesús hizo una clara declaración de que todo lo que nos rodea, todo aquello que podamos conocer, cambiaría. Nuestras relaciones, nuestro lugar de trabajo, las personas, las circunstancias, la salud, todo lo que ya es, ha de cambiar. Esto se dijo para que cuando ocurriera, no nos tomara por sorpresa, Él estaba diciéndonos, espera que sucederá.

¿Entonces por qué nos quejamos tanto cuando las cosas no salen como queremos o permanecen igual, como las conocemos? Nos gusta todo lo que es predecible, nos gusta todo lo que es seguro. Nuestra naturaleza gravita a ese tipo de lugar. Tenemos la tendencia a gustar los lugares o circunstancias que en nuestra mente percibimos o sentimos que tenemos control sobre ellas. Y cuando se nos quita ese control, se perturba nuestra paz, nuestra alegría y nuestra sensación de seguridad. Nos olvidamos de que el control no es más que una ilusión. Matt Chandler lo dijo mejor cuando su batalla con el cáncer comenzó: “Cuando la ilusión de control desaparece, nos convertimos en hombres y mujeres de oración”. Se nos recuerda que todo lo que sabemos cambiará y que no tenemos el control sobre ello.

Pero Jesús hizo otra declaración más significativa en esta oración. Sus palabras no pasarán, no cambiarán ni se moverán. El contraste aquí era evidente para todos. Él estaba diciendo, que la realidad de la vida nos mostrarían que ésta cambiaría constantemente, pero la realidad de Él nos asegura que nunca cambiará, moverá o pasará. Todo lo que dijo sería sólido, inamovible y confiable para cada etapa o circunstancia de la vida.

Pero el cambio no es necesariamente malo. Tenemos la tendencia de ver el cambio desde una perspectiva negativa. El cambio puede ser bueno, el cambio puede ser útil, aun cuando pudiera ser doloroso. El cambio puede impulsarnos a otro nivel y desarrollar en nosotros el carácter necesario para cumplir con el propósito que Dios nos ha dado. Porque lo que hay ahora, no está funcionando. Porque el status quo no es bueno. Lo que es importante, es la forma de cómo vemos el cambio.

Jesús sabía esto muy bien e hizo algo al respecto. Con su sacrificio en la cruz, Jesús se aseguró de que el cambio se hiciera permanente. Había conquistado el pecado, la muerte y el temor. No fue un mero cambio superficial, sino un cambio profundo. Él se convirtió en el cambio, Él nos perdonó, redimió y transformó.

La historia completa de la Biblia habla de cambio. Cambio para bien, para amor y para vida. Confía en su palabra que nunca pasará, que nunca se moverá y que nunca cambiará. Acepta el cambio.
