Not just a basket of roasted grain

One day Jesse said to David, “Take this basket of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread, and carry them quickly to your brothers.” 1 Samuel 17:17

That morning he woke up as usual, he got dressed and picked his well known tools. He looked at his staff. A rugged stick that had the marks he remembered very well. There were two in particular that bursted like calling out for attention. The staff was still showing some small dried-out stains of blood on them. His mind immediately wandered to that day as he remembered the morning, which quite frankly, was one just like this day, where he had done the same routine.

That day he went on to tend to his fathers flock, it was early, he used his staff to guide the sheep to the pasture. Hours had passed by and he was smiling when he saw the baby sheep playing and following their mothers. His mind started to remember how many times he had carried them, played with them. The tenderness of them draw his heart even more closer. The need for someone to stand up for them, to protect them and show them the way, was an inner force that stirred his soul and made his seemingly unimportant life, important. He already was shunned by his brothers, and in many ways he felt that his father did not had him in the highest regard. So as he saw the sheep, he saw himself. He saw the need for protection, for guidance, and for love. He knew that he had to be the voice for those that had none. And as he saw the sheep playing, a small voice resounded in his heart saying, “This is the way I love you and protect you”. And immediately he understood that God had used the sheep to shape his life. The shunning, the rejection and the affliction that was endured by him, were the vehicles God used to transform his life.

In the myriad of emotions, he caught his breath and with certain conviction in his spirit he took all of these emotions and realizations in. Standing up, there it was; lurking his way was the unthinkable; a lion. In a split second, every muscle in his body readied. His fists clenched, his eyes locked on his target, and like if his feet were leading his soul he began to run towards the beast. He had nothing in his hands but his staff. His spirit was fuel by an unexplainable thrust. And he fought the lion, and killed it. He defended the shunned, the unprotected, the weak and the meek. That day, with his hands filled with blood, he made the first mark in his staff. A mark that would remind him of God’s power and protection.

And returning from this wandering, he got up thinking it would be as usual. But then his father asked him to go see his brothers on the frontline of the battle against the Philistines. So David rose up and went of on to meet his brothers taking with him what he thought was just a basket of roasted grain. But this day staff in hand, he went out to fulfill his destiny.

So be aware, what might look as a mere basket, might be the key to the greatest moment in your life and not just a basket of roasted grain.

No solo una canasta de grano tostado

Un día, Isaí le dijo a David: “Toma esta canasta de grano tostado y estos diez panes, y llévaselos de prisa a tus hermanos”. 1 Samuel 17:17

Esa mañana se despertó como de costumbre, se vistió y recogió sus bien conocidos instrumentos. Miró su cayado. Un palo resistente que tenía marcas que recordaba muy bien. Había dos en particular que irrumpían como llamando su atención. El cayado todavía mostraba algunas pequeñas manchas secas de sangre. Su mente vagó de inmediato a ese día al recordar la mañana, que francamente, era un día como éste, donde había hecho la misma rutina.

Aquel día fue a ocuparse del rebaño de su padre, era temprano; él utilizaba su cayado para guiar a las ovejas a los pastos. Las horas habían pasado y estaba sonriendo al ver las ovejas bebés jugando y siguiendo a sus madres. Su mente empezó a recordar cuántas veces él las había cargado, jugado con ellas. La ternura de ellas atrajo su corazón aún más cerca. La necesidad de que alguien se levantase por ellas para protegerlas y enseñarles el camino, fue una fuerza interior que se agitó en su alma e hizo su vida, aparentemente sin importancia, importante. Sus hermanos lo habían rechazado, y de muchas maneras, sentía que su padre no lo tenía en alta estima. Así que, cuando vio las ovejas, se vio a sí mismo. Él vio la necesidad de protección, de orientación y de amor. Supo que tenía que ser la voz de aquellos que no tenían ninguna. Y al ver a las ovejas jugar, una pequeña voz resonó en su corazón diciendo: “Esta es la manera en que Te amo y te protejo”. Y de inmediato comprendió que Dios había utilizado las ovejas para dar forma a su vida. El desdeño, el rechazo y la aflicción que soportó fueron los vehículos que Dios usó para transformar su vida.

En la multitud de emociones, recuperó el aliento y con determinada convicción en su espíritu llevó todas estas emociones y realizaciones dentro de sí. Se levantó y allí estaba; lo inimaginable estaba en su camino, un león. En una fracción de segundo, cada músculo de su cuerpo se preparó. Con los puños apretados, los ojos fijos en su objetivo, y como si sus pies estuviesen dirigiendo su alma, comenzó a correr hacia la bestia. No tenía nada en sus manos, sino su cayado. Su espíritu era el combustible de un impulso inexplicable. Y luchó contra el león, y lo mató. Defendió a los rechazados, a los desprotegidos, a los débiles y a los mansos. Ese día, con las manos llenas de sangre, hizo la primera marca en su cayado. Una marca que le recordaría el poder de Dios y su protección.

Y regresando de este divagar, se levantó pensando que sería como de costumbre. Pero entonces su padre le pidió ir a ver a sus hermanos al frente de batalla contra los filisteos. Entonces David se levantó y se dirigió al encuentro de sus hermanos, llevando consigo lo que él pensaba que era sólo una canasta de grano tostado. Pero ese día, con cayado en mano, salió a cumplir su destino.

Así que, ten en cuenta, lo que podría parecer como una mera canasta, podría ser la clave para el mejor momento de tu vida y no solo una canasta de grano tostado.

For a higher purpose

“They were delighted when they heard why he had come, and they promised to give him money. So he began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus.” – Mark 14:11

We all know this story. The man Jesus had entrusted the finances, was the very one that turned against him. Sadly, it happens very often. It is that sense of unbelief, grief and even emptiness that floods our entire inner being. I am talking about the moment you realize that those you had trusted and confided, have turned their backs on you. You thought you knew someone, and then they reveal their true value. The unbelief and sadness fills your soul because you have realized that the unthinkable has happened, you have been betrayed.

Jesus knew this very well. He had poured out his entire strength and energy to help and uplift one of his own. But the one that betrayed him, also fulfilled a higher purpose in Jesus life. Without the betrayer, we wouldn’t have the cross. And without the cross, there would not be salvation. Pain brought upon a blessing.

You might be going through a similar situation. A spouse, a family member, a co-worker, a business partner or a friend, someone in whom you had poured out your trust into, but has done or said something that has hurt you deeply. These are moments that pound inside of you with pain, sadness, and a sense of emptiness. You might be questioning, why this injustice? And it is only natural to feel that way, but Jesus clearly stated, “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” And it is through Him that we can do the same. In these words he affirmed that we would undoubtedly experience, trails. But he also cemented, that through Him, we would be victors in spite of it.

Jesus went even further to say, “Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you.” So if you dwell in the pain, you will never move forward and you will become stagnant and consume yourself. Look at the trial as the step that will thrust you further in life and will help you grow more and more; the betrayal will be transformed into a blessing. The pain will birth new life in you, and you in turn will experience a new sense of purpose and your heart will be free and you will rise to new heights.

We are reminded in Romans 8:28, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” So this moment in your story might have come to you not to break you but to make you. This moment has come for a higher purpose.

Para un propósito más alto

“Ellos quedaron complacidos cuando oyeron la razón de su visita y le prometieron darle dinero. entonces él comenzó a buscar una oportunidad para traicionar a Jesús” – Marcos 14:11

Todos conocemos seta historia. El hombre a quién Jesus le había confiado las finanzas, fue el mismo que se tornó en su contra. Penosamente, esto ocurre muy a menudo. Es ese sentido de incredulidad, angustia e incluso de vacío, que inunda nuestro ser entero. Hablo de ese momento en el cual te das cuenta que aquellos en quienes habías confiado, se te han tornado en contra. Pensabas que conocías a alguien, y entonces revelan su verdadero valor. La incredulidad y la tristeza llena tu alma porque te has dado cuenta que lo impensable ha ocurrido, has sido traicionado.

Jesús conocía esto muy bien. Él había derramado su energía y fortaleza entera para ayudar y levantar a uno de los suyos. Pero aquel que lo traicionó, también cumplió un propósito mas alto en la vida de Jesús. Sin el traidor no hubiésemos tenido la cruz. Y sin la cruz, no habría salvación. El dolor trajo en sí una bendición.

Puedes estar pasado por una situación similar. Tu cónyuge, un miembro de la familia, un compañero de trabajo, un socio de negocios o un amigo, alguien en quien habías derramado tu confianza, pero ha hecho o dicho algo que te ha herido profundamente. Estos son momentos que te golpean profundamente con dolor, tristeza y un sentimiento de vacío. Podrías estar questionándote, ¿porqué esta injusticia? y es solo natural que te sientas así, pero Jesús declaró, “Les he dicho todo lo anterior para que en mi tengan paz. Aquí en el mundo tendrán muchas pruebas y tristezas pero anímense, porque yo he vencido al mundo.” Y es a través de Él que podemos hace lo mismo. En estas palabras el afirmó que indudablemente experimentaríamos, tribulaciones. Pero también solidificó, que a través de Él, seríamos victoriosos a a pesar de ellas.

Jesús fue más allá a decir, “Bendigan a quienes los maldicen. Oren por aquellos que los lastiman.”Así es que si te concentras en el dolor, nunca te moverás hacia adelante y te estancarás y te consumirás. Mira la prueba como un paso que te impulsará más en la vida y que te ayudará a crecer mas y más; la traición se convertirá en bendición. El dolor dará a luz nueva vida en ti, y en torno experimentarás un nuevo sentido de propósito y tu corazón será libre y te elevarás a nuevas alturas.

Se nos recuerda en Romanos 8:28, “Y sabemos que Dios hace que todas las cosas cooperen para el bien de los que lo aman y son llamados según el propósito que él tiene para ellos.” Así es que este momento en tu historia, puede haber venido no para romperte, sino para hacerte. Este momento ha venido para un propósito más alto.

The spirit of the avenger

When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him, and he was deeply troubled. – John 11:33

Avenger: someone who takes vengeance. This is a term we usually hear in action packed movies. It usually brings to mind the rouge and unrestrained man that continues his hatred filled agenda and his passionate pursuit of revenge. We portray scenes of blood thirsty vigilantes taking the justice in their own hands. But in this passage we see a different picture.

Jesus had delayed his arrival to Bethany, knowing that Lazarus was sick. In those moments of delay, I can imagine his heart pounding faster and faster. He loved this family, they were his friends and were very dear to his heart, and to wait patiently was a hard task to undertake. And as he obeyed God’s direction, the expectations began to grow inside. His was cool, calm and collected. But inside, something was happening, a spiritual tsunami was developing within him. The most inner fibers of his nature flourished to the skin of his being. There was hurt, sadness, and weeping all around. Then, it became real, clear and present, his enemy was before him. Death had challenged Life.

It is very difficult to understand the emotions and feelings Jesus had at that time. He was being faced with a very personal situation. He became troubled, and anger started to well up within him. A sense of justice and unconformity of the human condition, became a fuel that ignited his passion for redemption. I can imagine that every scene around him blurred as he walked unfazed toward the tomb. His mental stage was clear; death had to be stopped, suffering had to end and joy had to return. Nothing and no one, would stop him now, it was very personal, it was very real.

So He wept. He felt the same emotions you and I feel when someone is lost. When this life gets to us and we question every single belief we have and have ever considered. He went through the motions that you and I have traveled many times. But he remained and he conquered.

And then came those timeless words, “Lazarus, come out!”. Life had emerged in center stage and death recoiled at the sound of his vocal wave. Justice, life, and transformation had prevailed.

The same sense of purpose might be lingering inside of you. And it might come in the most unexpected way. It will appear in the midst of a very troubling time in your life. But it is probably that in that time in which you are most pressed and confused, that will thrust you into you calling and your destiny. Not to perform your own justice, but that of the One who knows all and loves all. A sense of destiny and purpose that will mark a new beginning for many, in the very middle of apparent chaos and confusion.

So your current situation can make you or break you, it is your decision. If you put your trust in God, believe his promises and abide in Him, it will be clear to you and to all, that your spirit has been stirred and everything around you will be transformed. Even those impossible and dead situations that you confront, because you have been infused with the spirit of the avenger.

EL espíritu del vengador

Cuando Jesús la vio llorando y vio que los demás se lamentaban con ella, se enojó en su interior y se conmovió profundamente. – Juan 11:33

Vengador: alguien que toma venganza. Este es un término que solemos escuchar en películas llenas de acción. Por lo general, trae a la memoria al hombre truhán y desenfrenado que continúa su agenda llena de odio y su apasionada búsqueda de venganza. Nos representan escenas de los vigilantes sedientos de sangre tomando la justicia en sus propias manos. Pero en este pasaje vemos una imagen diferente.

Jesús había retrasado su llegada a Betania, a sabiendas de que Lázaro estaba enfermo. En esos momentos de retraso, puedo imaginar su corazón latiendo fuertemente y cada vez más rápido. Él amaba a esta familia, ya que eran sus amigos y eran muy cercanos a su corazón, y el esperar con paciencia era una tarea difícil de realizar. Y mientras obedecía a la dirección de Dios, las expectativas comenzaron a crecer en su interior. Su semblante era uno sereno, tranquilo y quieto. Pero en su interior, algo estaba sucediendo; un tsunami espiritual se estaba desarrollando dentro de él. Las fibras más internas de su naturaleza salieron a flor de piel. Había dolor, tristeza y llanto por todos lados. Entonces, la situación para él se convirtió en real, clara y presente, su enemigo estaba frente a él. La muerte había desafiado a la vida.

Es muy difícil de entender las emociones y los sentimientos que Jesús tenía en ese momento. Él estaba frente a una situación muy personal. Se conmovió, y el enojo empezó a surgir en él. El sentido de justicia y la inconformidad de la condición humana, se convirtió en combustible que encendió su pasión por la redención. Me imagino que cada escena alrededor de él se veía borrosa mientras caminaba imperturbable hacia la tumba. Su estado mental era claro, la muerte tenía que ser detenida, el sufrimiento tenía que terminar y la alegría tenía que regresar. Nada ni nadie, podría detenerlo ahora, era muy personal, era muy real.

Así que lloró. Sintió las mismas emociones que tú y yo sentimos cuando alguien se ha perdido. Cuando la vida llega a nosotros y nos cuestionamos cada creencia que tenemos o hemos considerado. Él experimentó todas las emociones que tu y yo hemos recorrido muchas veces. Pero él permaneció y él conquistó.

Y entonces vinieron aquellas palabras intemporales: “¡Lázaro, sal de ahí!“. La vida había surgido en el centro de la escena y la muerte retrocedió al sonido de las ondas de su voz. La justicia, la vida y la transformación habían prevalecido.

El mismo sentido de propósito podría estar persistiendo dentro de ti. Y puede venir en la forma más inesperada. Aparecerá en medio de un momento muy inquietante de tu vida. Pero es probable que en ese momento en el que estás más presionado y confundido, sea el que te impulsará a tu llamado y a tu destino. No para llevar a cabo tu propia justicia, sino la de Aquel que todo lo sabe y que a todos ama. Un sentido de destino y finalidad que marcará un nuevo comienzo para muchos, en el mismo centro de aparente caos y confusión.

Así que tu situación actual puede hacerte o romperte; es tu decisión. Si pones tu confianza en Dios, crees en sus promesas y permaneces en él, será claro para ti y para todos, que tu espíritu ha sido conmovido y todo a tu alrededor se transformará. Incluso aquellas situaciones imposibles y muertas a las que te enfrentas, porque has sido infundido con el espíritu del vengador.

Sigue caminando, paso a paso

“Por lo tanto, dile al pueblo de Israel: “Yo soy el SEÑOR. Te libertaré de la opresión que sufres y te rescataré de tu esclavitud en Egipto. Te redimiré con mi brazo poderoso y con grandes actos de juicio. Te tomaré como pueblo mío y seré tu Dios. Entonces sabrás que yo soy el SEÑOR tu Dios, quien te ha librado de la opresión de Egipto. Te llevaré a la tierra que juré dar a Abraham, a Isaac y a Jacob; te la daré a ti como tu posesión exclusiva. ¡Yo soy el SEÑOR!”. Éxodo 6:6-8

¿Qué estarían pensando y sintiendo? Uno puede imaginarse que, mientras caminaban fuera de las calles de Egipto, una mezcla de emociones corría por sus cabezas, en sus corazones y en sus almas. Esto marcaba el fin de la esclavitud, del peligro y del trabajo duro y castigador. Sus ojos no podían creer que estaban dejando la tierra de Egipto, con tesoros que nunca soñaron, y mudándose a una tierra nunca vista. ¿Era real? ¿Podría ser esto posible? ¿Estaban haciendo lo correcto? Esto era nuevo para ellos. Ellos sólo habían experimentado la esclavitud y las penurias, ya que todos habían nacido en ella. Hacer ladrillos con paja y barro era la tarea tuvieron que padecer hasta este día, todos los días, así que cualquier cosa aparte de eso, era algo nuevo.

Pero a pesar de sus emociones, temores y dudas, ellos siguieron caminando. El sueño era mayor que el temor. Con cada paso que dieron hacían las pirámides imponentes más pequeñas y la esperanza en sus corazones por la libertad cada vez más grande. La promesa de Dios estaba siendo desplegada delante de sus ojos, Él les estaba redimiendo con un brazo poderoso y con grandes juicios. Y así siguieron caminando en la tierra que Dios le había prometido. Una tierra que no habían visto, pero Dios había prometido. Y ellos sabían que la promesa era cierta.

Podrías estar sintiendo lo mismo que los hijos de Israel sintieron. Tu alma rebosa de esperanza, una tierra nueva vendrá pronto a la vista. Algo anhelado por muchos años y oscurecido por lo común de la vida. Rechazado por las trivialidades de la vida cotidiana, pero hoy, es el día. El día en que saldrás de la cárcel que has hecho con tus propios pensamientos. Es el día en el que has de ser libre y caminar justo frente a los que te han oprimido por muchos años. Tu sendero puede ser desconocido, pero estará libre de paja y arcilla. Estará llena de nuevas experiencias, provisión, y dirección. Un lugar que te liberará del cautiverio, un lugar que abrirá aún más tu mente y tus dones. Un lugar donde el bien y la misericordia te seguirán. Un lugar que te cambiará y, a su vez, tu cambiaras el mundo.

Muchas emociones pueden estar corriendo dentro de ti. Y es posible que dudes en dar el siguiente paso, son muchas variables desconocidas y muchos resultados inciertos. Pero, ¿cuál es la alternativa? ¿El no hacer nada? Estar paralizado por el miedo inminente de una amenaza que puede ni siquiera es real? No hay ninguna garantía de lo que puedas enfrentar y es posible que estés entrando en un reto más grande, pero por una recompensa aún mayor. No más paja ni ladrillos, sino una promesa de una vida nueva. Una tierra que fluye leche y miel. Un lugar abundante.

Sigue caminando, paso a paso.

Keep walking, step by step

“Therefore, say to the people of Israel: ‘I am the Lord. I will free you from your oppression and will rescue you from your slavery in Egypt. I will redeem you with a powerful arm and great acts of judgment. I will claim you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God who has freed you from your oppression in Egypt. I will bring you into the land I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I will give it to you as your very own possession. I am the Lord!’” Exodus 6:6-8

What were they thinking and feeling? One can imagine that as they walked out through the streets of Egypt, mixed emotions raced in their heads, hearts and souls. This marked the ending of slavery, peril and hard punishing work. Their eyes could not believe they were leaving the land of Egypt, with treasures never dreamed of, and moving to a land never seen. Was this real? Could this be possible? Where they doing the right thing? This was so new to them. They had only experienced slavery and the hardship, since they had all had been born into it. Making bricks out of straw and clay was the task they had to endure up to this day, every day, so anything aside of that, was new.

But in spite of their emotions, fears and doubts, they kept walking. The dream was greater than the fear. With very step they took the towering pyramids looked smaller, and the hope in their hearts for freedom larger and larger. God’s promise was being unfolded in front of their eyes; He was redeeming them with a powerful arm and great acts of judgement. And so they kept walking into the land God had promised. A land they had not seen, but God had promised. And they knew the promise was true.

You might be feeling quite the same as the children of Israel felt. Your soul brims with expectation, a new land will come in sight soon. Something yearned for many years and obscured by the commonality of life. Shunned by the trivialities of everyday, but today, is the day. The day you will walk out of that prison made by your own thoughts. It is the day your will become free and will walk right in front of those that had oppressed you for many years. Your path might be unknown, but it will be free of straws and clay. It will be filled with provision, direction and new experiences.
