A veces se necesita luchar

Con frecuencia nos encontramos todos con muchos desafíos en el trabajo, en nuestras relaciones y nuestros sueños. Tenemos la idea de que si algo está destinado a pasar, pasará. Yo podría estar de acuerdo en parte con esta hipótesis, sin descartar que pueda haber siempre algo de resistencia.

Los hijos de Israel sabían esto muy bien. Se les había prometido la tierra de Canaán que fluía leche y miel. Una tierra que era la representación de una vida mejor y un futuro más brillante. Uno pensaría que después de haber estado en el desierto cuarenta años, un respiro vendría. Pero al entrar en la tierra, se encontraron con su primer desafío, Jericó. Puede que hayan pensado que tal como sucedió con Jericó, donde simplemente tuvieron que marchar para que los muros se derribaran, cada encuentro sería igual. Pero no, ellos lucharon treinta y nueve batallas para conquistar la tierra prometida. Una tierra nueva, una tierra extraña en la que encontraron gigantes, cruzaron ríos, y numerosos obstáculos que tuvieron que superar.

Así es nuestra vida. Puede ser que tengamos esta idea preconcebida de que todo va a ser fácil y que no habrá problemas en nuestro camino si algo está destinado a pasar. Y es cierto, a veces sucede de esa manera, y se siente bien. Pero la realidad es que a veces se necesita luchar por la promesa. Algunas de ellas serán más fáciles ganar, pero otras serán batallas feroces y difíciles. Encuentros que dejarán cicatrices y marcas en el corazón y en el alma. Tenemos que entender que hay una parte que debemos hacer nosotros, como el predicador en Eclesiastés escribió: “Y todo lo que te venga a la mano, hazlo con todo empeño; porque en el *sepulcro, adonde te diriges, no hay trabajo ni planes ni conocimiento ni sabiduría..” Las cosas podrían no suceder como las imaginaste o creíste que pasarían, pero aprendemos, crecemos y obtenemos experiencia que nos preparará para nuestra próxima misión.

Jesús sabía todo esto muy bien. Él luchó por ti y por mí, e hizo el mayor de los sacrificios, dio su vida. Y dejó marcas en su cuerpo, pero triunfó. Y porque él venció, nosotros somos vencedores y no víctimas. No debemos sentirnos tristes o desanimados cuando encontramos resistencia y problemas en nuestro camino. Puedo asegurarte que en ti se está construyendo carácter y experiencia. Estás siendo preparado para un propósito mayor. Tal vez esta dificultad actual, este problema, esta resistencia, es el evento que abrirá los dones y talentos que han estado ocultos en ti. Este podría ser el momento que has estado construyendo con el fin de vivir en tu tierra prometida.

Así que sacúdete esos pensamientos de derrota y degradantes, y sigue adelante. Prepárate, elabora estrategias y consulta, no es el momento de sentarse a vagar y a compadecerse, es el momento de caminar y luchar. Hay una recompensa esperando, hay un futuro brillante y mayor a la vista. Y como los hijos de Israel experimentaron, se necesitará un gran esfuerzo, además de tiempo, pero valdrá la pena.

Tu bendición viene, está cerca tu promesa, pero a veces se necesita luchar.

Your staff and your sling

David fastened his sword to his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. And David said to Saul, “I cannot walk with these, for I have not tested them.” So David took them off. – 1 Samuel 17:39 NKJV

This is a very well known story. King David defeated Goliath and his way to greatness became the town’s headlines. We all center in to the part where he throws the stone that hits the giants forehead and makes him fall. An epic moment and a tipping point for David and the people of Israel.

But clearly in the story there is more metaphoric material that will enrich every reader and lover of life. The fact that David was at the right place and at the right time doesn’t underscore the preparation and the history that his life was bringing to the scene. He blurts it out to King Saul, of how he had been in fiery battles with animals when he was tending his fathers sheep, that made him more than capable to confront this mighty opponent.

David must have made quite a compelling argument to the king so he could authorize him to fight. It must have, because on this fight, everything else hanged. In the text we see that, upon agreeing, Saul tells David to put on his royal armor. David did so, but after trying to walk, he refused to wear it to the battle and geared up with all that he had known, his staff and his sling.

How many times have you dressed up to someone else’s expectations? Are you living another person’s dream? Have you spent your time indulging the acceptance of everybody else and neglecting your own life? It is time to dress up with our own gear, to dream your own dreams and to live your life on God’s terms.

We often neglect that God will use who we are and what we have, without the help of anyone else. When we understand that to be the man and the woman we have been called to be, we need not to please anyone, we will find our place and perform our destiny, as David did when he confronted this giant. The text says that he ran to him, something he would not had been able to do if he had Saul’s armor on. When you know who you are and what you are supposed to do, you will shine and excel at the most crucial moment of your life. And your life and those around you will be better for it.

Greatness will be exuded from you, because you dressed up with your staff and your sling.

Tu cayado y tu honda

Y ciñó David su espada sobre sus vestidos, y probó a andar, porque nunca había hecho la prueba. Y dijo David a Saúl: Yo no puedo andar con esto, porque nunca lo practiqué. Y David echó de sí aquellas cosas. – 1 Samuel 17:39

Esta es una historia muy conocida. El Rey David venció a Goliat y su camino hacia la grandeza se convirtió en los titulares de la ciudad. Todos nos centramos en la parte de la historia donde él lanza la piedra que golpea al gigante en la frente y le hace caer; un momento épico y un punto de inflexión para David y el pueblo de Israel.

Pero claramente hay más material metafórico en la historia que ha de enriquecer a cada lector y amante de la vida. El hecho de que David estuviese en el lugar correcto y en el momento adecuado no subraya la preparación y la historia que su vida traía a la escena. Él le expresa al rey Saúl cómo había luchado ferozmente con los animales cuando atendía las ovejas de su padre, lo que lo hacía más capaz para hacer frente a este poderoso contrincante.

David debió haber hecho un argumento convincente ante el rey para que lo autorizara a pelear. Debió haber sido así, porque todo lo demás dependía de esta lucha. En el texto vemos que, luego de estar de acuerdo, Saúl le dijo a David que se pusiera su armadura real. David así lo hizo, pero después de tratar de caminar, se negó a usarla en la batalla, y se preparó con todo lo que él conocía, su cayado y su honda.

¿Cuántas veces te has vestido de las expectativas de otra persona? ¿Estás viviendo el sueño de otro? ¿Has pasado el tiempo buscando la aceptación de los demás dejando a un lado tu propia vida? Es tiempo de vestirte con tu propio equipo, para soñar tus propios sueños y vivir la vida de acuerdo a los términos de Dios.

A menudo ignoramos que Dios usará lo que somos y lo que tenemos, sin la ayuda de nadie. Cuando entendamos que para ser el hombre y la mujer que se nos ha llamado a ser, no necesitamos complacer a nadie, encontraremos nuestro lugar y realizaremos nuestro destino, así como lo hizo David cuando se enfrentó a este gigante. El texto dice que corrió hacia él, algo que no hubiese podido hacer si se hubiese puesto la armadura de Saúl. Cuando sabes quién eres y lo que se supone que hagas, brillarás y te destacarás en el momento más crucial de tu vida. Y tu vida y los que te rodean será mucho mejor por ello.

La grandeza emanará de ti, por haberte vestido con tu cayado y tu honda.

Greatness

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

This is a concept, that in itself sounds pretty dry to our ears. It actually feels sometimes like a car brake; we think it is slowing us down. Talking about process makes us feel pain even when we haven’t gone through it or even started.

We are inspired by the stories that evoke human achievement. The ones that portray an underdog that emerges triumphant. Or the ones where an immense injustice has been done, and that it is ultimately redeemed. We all have heard of them. Men and women like Rosa Parks that took a stand that started a civil rights movement. Eric Liddle, who won the Olympic Games in a race he had not trained for, after refusing to run on a day he regarded as sacred to his beliefs. Joseph, that was promoted to second in command right out from the dungeons. What about king David, that had to run for years after he was anointed as king, walking with a bunch of rejects as his army. We could mention hundreds of known and unknown stories that rekindle the spark of creativity, courage and tenacity in us. They have many things in common, but the one that we often oversee, is process.

To get to that tipping point, to be equipped with the necessary tools for the task at hand, they all underwent a process that gave them the capacity and the character to perform and transform the situation they were in. Creation itself, underwent a transformation that took time. Such is life, a process. The mere growth and transformation that takes place in the womb of a woman, and the time it takes for the child to develop to term and ultimate birth, is a process. When that stage ends, a new one starts. And what a wonderful metaphor to use for describing process.

It is also true for you. It could be that you’re in the early stages of your situation and see no reason why you are in the middle of an unending drama that consumes every single second of your thought life. An injustice is taking place and you cannot see the way out or the reasoning for it. It makes it hard to understand that great dreams are building up inside of you, but your reality is just so different and everything screams at you to kill those dreams. It might be so personal, that great pain is what you only know as a way of living. But would you consider a different stance? Would you give yourself a new opportunity? It might be the process that God is using to reshape your thinking, your character and your attitude, so when the time comes, it will exude the greatness for what you have been created.

So don’t reject process, embrace it, let it teach you. Look at it from another angle, because all things are meant for good for those who love God. And I grant you that I do not know what your situation is, how hard or complicated it is. But process is not our enemy, it might be our ally and maybe you can then see your current job, your family situation, a business deal, the place you live, your pain, from a different perspective and not be bitter, but grateful.

And always remember that God loves you and we should see our situation through God’s eyes, and not God through our situation. Because it could just be the one thing that will change your life; process.
