…pasemos al otro lado

Viéndose Jesús rodeado de mucha gente, mandó pasar al otro lado. Mateo 8:18

Cuán maravilloso es saber que si Él dijo que pasáramos al otro lado, Él sabe que llegaremos allá. Jesús dio un mandato. No fue una sugerencia, mucho menos una pregunta, fue un mandato. Si lees cuidadosamente la Escritura, también fue Él el primero en subir a la embarcación y luego sus discípulos le siguieron.

Vemos el agite a nuestro alrededor y conscientemente racionalizamos, “No voy a tomar esa dirección”. Pero profundamente en nuestro interior, Su voz nos está diciendo “pasemos al otro lado”. Lo sabemos, pero tenemos miedo, nos sentimos inciertos e incómodos. ¿No has notado que Él es el primero en subirse a la embarcación? Jesús sabía que una tormenta estaba en el horizonte, y posiblemente sus discípulos miraron al cielo y pensaron, “esto se va a poner feo”. No obstante, Jesús fue el primero abordo. Su poder sobre todas las cosas sería luego manifiesto en medio de la tormenta.

¿Qué es lo que te priva el sueño hoy? ¿Qué te ha rodeado que te mantiene inquieto? ¿Estás preocupado por el futuro, de los “tal vez” de la vida? Esas situaciones y cuadros mentales que creamos y por las que nos inquietamos tanto. El ya está en la embarcación. Él conoce tu condición, Él conoce lo que te hace falta, lo que deseas y lo que necesitas. Él sabe. En medio de la situación usualmente no lo vemos a Él. Sólo vemos las olas. Nos vemos a nosotros mismos, solos. Nuestros corazones se llenan de temor hacia lo desconocido.

Su mandato es a – pasar al otro lado-. Y si Él lo dijo, lo creemos, y está hecho. El tiene la intención y cumplirá su Palabra. Sus pensamientos para ti son pensamientos de paz y no de mal, para darte un futuro y una esperanza. Él ya está en la embarcación. Está esperando a que tú la abordes y comiences a navegar. Sí, una tormenta podría estar en el horizonte, una situación difícil está probablemente a la vuelta de la esquina, o posiblemente ya estés en una, pero la buena noticia es que Él está en la embarcación, y más importante aún, que Él dijo que pasemos al otro lado.

No temas, Él se levantará en medio de la tormenta y reprenderá al viento y al mar. Recuerda Él dijo, “pasemos al otro lado”.

…depart to the other side

And when Jesus saw great multitudes about Him, He gave a command to depart to the other side. Matthew 8:18

How amazing it is to know that if He said to depart to the other side, He knows we will get there. Jesus gave the command. It was not a suggestion, much less a question, a command. If you read carefully the scripture, He was also the first on the boat, and then His disciples followed him.

We see all of the turmoil around us and we consciously rationalize, I’m not going that way. But deep down inside His voice is saying, “depart to the other side”. We know it, but we are afraid, we feel uncertain and uncomfortable. Haven’t you noticed that He is the first one on the boat? Jesus knew that a storm was on the horizon, and maybe his disciples saw the sky and realized, it’s going to get ugly. Nevertheless, Jesus was the first on-board. His power over everything was later manifested in the middle of the storm.

What is it today that is depriving your sleep? What has surrounded you that keeps you unease? Are you concerned about the future, the what ifs’ of life. Those situations and mental outcomes that we create and dread so much. He is already in the boat. He knows your condition, He knows what you are lacking, wanting, needing. He knows. In middle of the situation we often don’t see Him. We just see the waves. We just see ourselves, alone. Our hearts fill with fear of the unknown.

His command is to -depart to the other side-. And if He said it, we believe it and that settles it. He intends and will perform his word. His thoughts for you are thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. He is already in the boat. He is waiting for you to get in and start sailing. Yes, a storm might be in the horizon, a difficult situation is probably around the corner, or maybe you are already in one, but the good news is that He is in the boat, and more importantly, He said to depart to the other side.

Don’t fear, He will arise in middle of the storm and rebuke the wind and the sea. Remember, He said, “depart to the other side”

Polish your shoes

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

This morning after mi kids left for school and I was left home to tend to the morning chores that I have to do (or sometimes impose myself to do), I went to my closet to dress up for work. I selected a suit, a shirt, tie, belt and of course my shoes. Then it hit me. These are very nice, comfortable shoes but they didn’t look particularly clean. So even when I don’t like to do it I headed to clean and polish them. This is a process I don’t like, because you get your hands dirty and sticky and after you finish you have to wash your hands very thoroughly so the wax is removed.

Obviously, I am not a professional at doing this, but I do make sure that everything is clean and polished. This is my process: I start by using a coarse brush to wipe clean the entire shoe. Then I select the polishing wax and apply it either by hand or by a smaller brush that is able to penetrate the most intricate places of the shoe, around the sole and between the laces. I let it to dry a little and start brushing out the excess with the same brush I started with. It makes me feel good when I start to see the luster coming out. But there is still more to do. This luster is still a little dull. For that I have another brush, that has more softer and gentle bristles that when applied to the shoe more luster is revealed. This is a brush I like to use, because it reveals the nicer shoe that I was looking for. I also use a cloth, that will polish even further what the brush had already treated and left behind.

While I was doing this, I started to think how God polishes our character every day, if we let Him. You see, a decision needs to be made. That is, the realization that you need cleaning and polishing. And after that, heading to a place or towards the circumstance that will start that process. Once there, if one is to dirty and dull, a coarse brush will do the first job of cleaning and preparing the surface, then you will receive that what is missing, that which will polish you life. Once that is applied the excesses are removed and the luster starts to be revealed. After that only finishing touches and maintenance would be the only thing needed.

Decide today to head out to the polishing pit. Decide today to maintain your life in absolute luster. And even when situations appear to be very coarse and hurtful in your life and you might not understand them, it may be that God will use them to clean and polish you. It may be the only way that the luster of your life will be revealed to the world and make the best impression ever. Maybe God is using this circumstance, this uncomfortable moment to turn around your life and make it shine like never before. It all starts with one decision that only you can make. So go ahead, polish your shoes.

Brilla tus zapatos

Ahora bien, sabemos que Dios dispone todas las cosas para el bien de quienes lo aman,s los que han sido llamados de acuerdo con su propósito. Romanos 8:28

Esta mañana, después de que los niños salieron para la escuela, me quedé en casa para atender a las tareas de la mañana que tengo que hacer (o, que a veces me impongo a mí mismo a hacer), me fui a mi cuarto a vestirme para el trabajo. Seleccioné un traje, una camisa, corbata, cinturón y por supuesto, mis zapatos. Entonces me di cuenta. Estos son zapatos muy bonitos y cómodos, pero no están particularmente limpios. Así que aún cuando no me gusta hacerlo me dirigí a limpiar y a brillarlos. Este es un proceso que no me gusta, porque terminas con las manos sucias y pegajosas, y después de hay que lavarse las manos profundamente para quitarse la cera.

Obviamente, no soy un profesional haciendo esto, pero sí me aseguro de que todo quede limpio y brillado. Este es mi proceso: empiezo con un cepillo grueso para limpiar el zapato entero. Luego selecciono la cera para brillar y la aplicarlo ya sea a mano o mediante un cepillo más pequeño capaz de penetrar en los lugares más intrincados del zapato, alrededor de la suela y entre los cordones. Dejo que se seque un poco y comienzo a cepillar el exceso usando el mismo cepillo con el que empecé. Me hace sentir bien cuando comienzo a ver el brillo que sale. Pero todavía hay más por hacer. Este brillo es todavía un poco opaco. Para eso tengo otro cepillo, que tiene cerdas más suaves y gentiles que cuando se aplica al de zapato, revela más lustre. Este es un cepillo que me gusta utilizar, porque revela un zapato más agradable, uno que yo estaba buscando. También uso un paño, que brilla aún más lo que el cepillo había tratado y dejado atrás.

Mientras yo hacía esto, me puse a pensar cómo Dios brilla nuestras vidas cada día, si se lo permitimos. Verás, hay una decisión que tienes que hacer. Es decir, la constatación de que necesitas ser limpiado y pulido. Y después de eso, ir en dirección a un lugar o hacia la circunstancia que iniciará ese proceso. Una vez allí, si uno está sucio y sin brillo, un cepillo mas grueso hará el primer trabajo de limpieza y preparación de la superficie, entonces recibirá lo que te hace falta, aquello que pulirá tu vida. Una vez aplicado, los excesos son eliminados y el brillo comienza a ser revelado. Después de eso lo único necesario será, el mantener y dar los toques finales.

Decide hoy salir al lugar del pulido. Decide hoy mantener tu vida en total brillo. E incluso cuando las situaciones parecen ser muy ásperas y dolorosas en la vida y posiblemente no las entendamos, puede ser que Dios las utiliza para limpiar y pulirte. Puede ser la única manera de que el brillo de tu vida se dará a conocer al mundo y así dar la mejor impresión. Tal vez Dios está usando esta circunstancia, este momento incómodo para darle un giro a tu vida y hacer que brille como nunca antes. Todo comienza con una decisión que sólo tu puede hacer. Así que adelante, brilla tus zapatos.

No place for playing it safe

Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord’s money. Matthew 25:16-18

Jesus was referring to his disciples the parable of the talents. A businessman had left his money for his servants to take care of it. They were given what in today’s currency would be the equivalent of $150,000.00 per talent. Quite an amount of money! Two of them took risks. Big risks! They traded and multiplied what was given to them, but the last one that had only one talent, hid it and played it safe. The parable goes on to say that when the master came and requested a report, the first two could account of their dealings and outcome and they where praised and rewarded, but the last one just returned what he had been given, without even interest and he was reprimanded and punished; even what he had been given, was taken away from him.

You and I have been given much and we will have to give an account for it. What will you say when it is requested from you? What will your report be? The parable has many profound teachings, but one that stands out is that God wants us to take risks, to be bold, audacious and firm. He made our life to be an adventure and for it to reflect his character. God seeks fruit in our lives, He expects a return of all he has created. He is the definition of fruitfulness. He created everything out of nothing and has made us to his image and resemblance.

This is not the time to play it safe, this is not the time for that. He has given you talents and gifts that are to be used and multiplied. Don’t be afraid to undertake new challenges and to use those gifts and talents that God has entrusted you to the fullest. Yes, you could even feel uneasy because everything is not “just right”, but it might be your desire for control everything, and in doing so, you could miss one of the greatest moments in your life. Ask God for his direction and your paths will be directed. Dream big, pray hard, be bold and audacious.

You don’t want to live a should’a, could’a, would’a life and die. Better to try and fail, that not to try at all. This might be your greatest moment, so there is no place for playing it safe.

No hay lugar para jugar a lo seguro

El que había recibido las cinco mil fue en seguida y negoció con ellas y ganó otras cinco mil. Así mismo, el que recibió dos mil ganó otras dos mil. Pero el que había recibido mil fue, cavó un hoyo en la tierra y escondió el dinero de su señor. Mateo 25:16-18

Jesús le refería a sus discípulos la parábola de los talentos. Un hombre de negocios le había dejado su dinero para que sus siervos cuidaran de él. A estos se les dio lo que en la moneda de hoy sería el equivalente a $150,000.00 por talento. ¡Una gran cantidad de dinero! Dos de ellos tomaron riesgos. ¡Grandes riesgos! Ellos negociaron y multiplicaron lo que les fue dado, pero el último que tenía un solo talento, lo escondió y jugó a lo seguro. La parábola continua diciendo que cuando el maestro se acercó y solicitó un informe, los dos primeros pudieron dar cuenta de sus negocios y resultados; por esto se les alabó y se les premió, pero el último sólo devolvió lo que le se le había dado, sin ni siquiera intereses, y a éste se le amonestó y se le castigó; incluso lo que había sido dado, se le quitó.

A ti y a mi se nos ha dado mucho y tendremos que dar cuenta de ello. ¿Qué vas a decir cuando se te pida cuentas? ¿Qué ha de ser tu informe? La parábola tiene muchas enseñanzas profundas, pero una que se destaca es que Dios quiere que tomemos riesgos, que seamos valientes, audaces y firmes. Hizo que nuestra vida sea una aventura que refleje su carácter. Dios siempre busca fruto en nuestras vidas. Él espera resultado de todo lo que ha creado. Él es la definición de productividad. Él creó todo de la nada y nos ha hecho a su imagen y semejanza.

Este no es el momento de jugar a lo seguro, no es el momento para eso. Él te ha dado talentos y dones que debes utilizar y multiplicar. No tengas miedo de emprender nuevos retos y de utilizar al máximo los dones y talentos que Dios te ha confiado. Sí, puede que incluso te sientas incómodo porque todo no está “justo como quieres”, pero este podría ser tu deseo de controlarlo todo, y al hacerlo, puedes perder uno de los mejores momentos de tu vida. Pide a Dios su dirección y Él dirigirá tus caminos. Sueña en grande, ora mucho, sé valiente y sé audaz.

No quieres vivir una vida de: ¿debería?, ¿podría?, ¿sería? y morir. Mejor tratar y fallar que no tratar en lo absoluto. Este podría ser tu mejor momento, así que no hay lugar para jugar a lo seguro.

Will you flee?

But I said, “Should a man like me run away? Or should someone like me go into the temple to save his life? I will not go!” Nehemiah 6:11

Nehemiah was in the midst of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, when he was interrupted five times with messages from Sanballat Geshem Tobias for him to stop. He answered each time in the same way, “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?” (v. 3). They even invented stories and sent them in writing saying that the intention of Nehemiah, was not merely to rebuild the city, but that he planned a revolt and would proclaim himself king (v. 6-7). Nothing further from reality.

The story tells us that Nehemiah did not stop the work he was doing, and that even when he answered, his answer was short and fast as at other times – “No such things as you say are being done, but you invent them in your own heart,” ( v. 8 ) – He did not enter into arguments, no explanations offered. Was direct and did not wander from what he had been called. He acknowledged that he was in a difficult moment, but could discern that if he paid attention to the distractions of his present, its future would be affected. Nehemiah, decided he would not flee. He would not let fear dictate his actions, he would not take refuge in a safe place when a great work was in progress. He would not allow fear to mark his destiny and be remembered that way. (v. 13) He also acknowledged he was doing a great work, and could not attend to other things or allow fear to deflect him.

What is distracting you today? Is it the fear of the unknown that dictates how you respond to distractions? Does your financial situation paralyze you and drive you to refuge to “your safe place?” To make decisions based on fear? Or perhaps it is a disease that you’ve been struggling for a while and you want to give up. You question often, what will happen to your children? Scripture tells us that Nehemiah recognized that the distraction was just that, a distraction, and would not allow fear to define him, or arrest him, or controls him.

Today, recognize your way, acknowledge that you are doing a great work with your children, your job, your family, your neighbors and you will not be heeding the distractions. Remember that when you’re in the midst of a great work, the distractions will not cease. But you will not let fear define who you are. You are doing a great work and you can’t stop. Look at the wall and continue to build. Do not be dismayed.

Fear does not define you. Ignore the distractions. Do as the prophet did, more than a question he made a declaration. Being a man or a woman like you, will you flee? Definitely never!

¿Haz de huir?

Pero yo le respondí: “¡Yo no soy de los que huyen! ¡Los hombres como yo no corren a esconderse en el templo para salvar la vida! ¡No me esconderé!” Nehemías 6:11

Nehemías estaba en medio de la reconstrucción de las murallas de Jerusalén cuando fue interrumpido cinco veces con mensajes de Sanbalat, Tobías y Gesem, para que se detuviera. Les contestó cada vez de la misma forma, “Yo hago una gran obra, y no puedo ir; porque cesaría la obra, dejándola yo para ir a vosotros” (v. 3). Incluso, inventaron historias y las enviaron por escrito diciendo que la intención de Nehemías, no era meramente reconstruir la ciudad, sino que tenía pensado rebelarse y también proclamarse rey (v. 6-7). Nada mas alejado de la realidad.

El relato nos dice que Nehemías no se detuvo de la obra que estaba haciendo, y que aún cuando respondió, su respuesta fue breve y rápida como en las otras ocasiones -”No hay tal cosa como dices, sino que de tu corazón tu lo inventas” ( v. 8 ) – No entró en argumentos, no ofreció explicaciones. Fue directo y no quitó su enfoque para lo que había sido llamado. Reconoció que estaba viviendo momentos difíciles, pero pudo discernir que si les hacía caso a las distracciones de su presente, su futuro se vería afectado. Nehemías, decidió que no huiría. No permitiría que el temor dictara sus acciones, no se refugiaría en un lugar seguro cuando una gran obra estaba en proceso. No permitiría que el temor marcara su destino y fuera recordado de esa manera. (v. 13) Reconoció además que hacía una gran obra, y no podía atender otras cosas ni permitir que el temor lo desviara.

¿Que te distrae hoy? ¿Es el temor a lo desconocido lo que dicta como respondes a las distracciones? ¿Es tu situación económica la que te paraliza e impulsa a refugiarte a “tu lugar seguro”? ¿A tomar decisiones basadas en temor? O quizás es una enfermedad con la que haz estado luchando por un tiempo y ya quieres rendirte. ¿Preguntas muchas veces que pasará con tus hijos? La escritura nos dice que Nehemías reconoció que la distracción era precisamente eso, una distracción, y que no permitiría que el temor lo definiera, ni que lo arrestara, ni lo controlara.

Hoy, reconoce tu camino, reconoce que estas haciendo una gran obra con tus hijos, tu trabajo, tu familia, tus vecinos, y que no vas a hacerle caso a las distracciones. Recuerda que cuando estás en medio de una gran obra, estas no cesarán. Pero no permitirás que el temor defina quien eres. Haces una gran obra y no te puedes detener. Torna tu mirada al muro y sigue construyendo. No desmayes ni te rindas.

El temor no te define. No hagas caso a las distracciones y haz hoy como hizo el profeta, que mas que una pregunta hizo una declaración. Siendo un hombre o una mujer como tu, ¿haz de huir? ¡Definitivamente jamás!
