While we wait

Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled. Romans 15:4 NLT

A friend of mine who had recently relocated to another country, was seeking for a job in order to also relocate his family. Being alone for some time and going from job interview to job interview with no results to show, had started to make his uneasiness grow. Not that he had been idle, in fact he was getting up early every day and doing his part. He had made a plan and put it to action, counted his resources, and made provision. For him, this was a move like no other one he had done before. Him moving was not prompted by his desire, but he was certain that it was directed by The Master. He had a promise, and God always fulfills his promises.

So why he had not seen any results? No offers, no glimmer of hope. While he was being faithful and waited, his available resources were being depleted. He had calculated the time it would take exhaust them, and that time was close. And then his wife told him that she was also “all in”, and went on to quit her job and told him so. God had given them a promise and she believed it.

One of those “waiting days”, we had the chance to chat early in the morning and this issue came up. We exchanged some comments and then he said, “I’m waiting, waiting”. I could sense some frustration about the process in his comments, so I reminded him about this scripture, “…as we wait patiently…”.

Paul exhorted the Romans as to how to live and care for those that were among them. Had been telling them how to conduct themselves and why and apparently there were some among them that had been having some trouble and their patience was running slim when it came to considering their brothers and encouraging them. Then this verse comes in the middle of all his instructions and summarizes his teaching and seals the truth about God’s character. God cannot die, lie, be fooled or stop loving us.

Everything that is written in the scriptures is there to give us hope and encouragement, while we wait for the promises of God to be fulfilled in our life and on the lives of those around us. Paul with this verse is stating that the promises of God are not to be doubted or questioned, but to be expected. We live on promises not explanations. Just as the romans had troubles, tribulations and issues, we have our share of situations, but no situation will ever be as tangible as promise made by God.

Back to my friend. Just a couple of days later he received not one, but several job offers at the same time, and his problem now was to decide which one to accept. At the time of this writing, his family is traveling to meet him, their promise came to pass and their new journey begins.

Do not despair, do not be anxious, his promises are true and while we wait we should delve into his word to be filled with hope, encouragement and instruction. They were written long time ago to prepare you for your next assignment, and the process will help you grow into the man and women that God intended you to be. And all of this will happen, while we wait.

Mientras esperamos

Tales cosas se escribieron hace tiempo en las Escrituras para que nos sirvan de enseñanza. Y las Escrituras nos dan esperanza y ánimo mientras esperamos con paciencia hasta que se cumplan las promesas de Dios. Romanos 15:4 NTV

Un amigo que recientemente se trasladó a otro país, había estado buscando empleo con el fin de trasladar también a su familia. El estar solo por algún tiempo y el ir de entrevista a entrevista sin ningún resultado, comenzó a hacer que su inquietud aumentara. No es que él hubiera estado inactivo. De hecho se levantaba temprano todos los días y hacía su parte. Tenía un plan el cual puso en acción. Contó sus recursos e hizo provisión. Para él, éste era un paso como ninguno que hubiese hecho antes. Su movida no fue motivada por su deseo, él estaba seguro de que fue dirigido por el Maestro. Había una promesa, y Dios siempre cumple sus promesas.

Entonces, ¿por qué no había visto ningún resultado? No había ninguna oferta, ningún atisbo de esperanza. Mientras se mantenía fiel y esperaba, los recursos disponibles que tenía, se agotaban. Había calculado el tiempo hasta donde esos recursos llegarían, y ese tiempo estaba muy cerca. Y entonces su esposa le dijo que ella también estaba “totalmente comprometida,” y fue y renunció a su trabajo, y así se lo comunicó. Dios les había dado una promesa y ella la creía.

Uno de esos “días de espera,” tuvimos la oportunidad de charlar temprano en la mañana y este tema surgió. Habíamos intercambiado algunos comentarios y luego dijo: “Estoy esperando, esperando.” Pude percibir cierta frustración sobre el proceso se manifestaba en sus comentarios así que le recordé acerca de esta escritura, “…mientras esperamos con paciencia…”

Pablo exhortó a los romanos en cuanto a cómo vivir y cuidar de aquellos que estaban entre ellos. Les había dicho cómo debían conducirse y por qué y al parecer, había algunos entre ellos que habían tenido algunos problemas y probablemente su paciencia se estaba agotando cuando se trataba de considerar a los hermanos y el alentarlos. Entonces este versículo se presenta en el centro de todas sus instrucciones, resume su enseñanza y sella la verdad sobre el carácter de Dios. Dios no puede morir, mentir, ser engañado o dejar de amarnos.

Todo lo que está escrito en las Escrituras está ahí para darnos esperanza y aliento mientras esperamos que las promesas de Dios se cumplan en nuestras vidas y en las vidas de quienes nos rodean. Pablo, con este versículo, está afirmando que las promesas de Dios no se dudan o se cuestionan, sino que se esperan. Vivimos sobre promesas no sobre explicaciones. Tal como los romanos tenían problemas, tribulaciones y situaciones, nosotros también tenemos las nuestras, pero ninguna situación será tan tangible como una promesa hecha por Dios.

De vuelta a mi amigo. Sólo un par de días después recibió no una, sino varias ofertas de empleo al mismo tiempo, y su problema ahora era decidir cuál elegir. Al momento de este escrito, su familia viaja a su encuentro, su promesa se cumplió y su nueva jornada comienza.

No te desesperes, no te ansíes, sus promesas son verdaderas y mientras esperamos, debemos profundizar en su palabra que nos llena de esperanza, aliento e instrucción. Fueron escritas mucho tiempo atrás para prepararte para tu próxima misión, y el proceso te ayudará a crecer en el hombre y la mujer que Dios quiere que seas. Y todo esto ha de pasar, mientras esperamos.

There is no plan B

Then he appointed twelve of them and called them his apostles. They were to accompany him, and he would send them out to preach – Mark 3:14

On any endeavor or task we set ourselves to do, we usually consider more than one option. We always see what the possible outcomes could be and we try to minimize the risk by having a “backup” plan so to say, just in case our first plan does not work as we thought. This is very practical advice and I usually follow this practice of having many options. But there are times I have been in that there is only one way and no other. My focus is razor sharp and usually stress levels are high, because in the end there is only one plan and it has to work. I know that when I am in a crossroad, the way I see things is completely different because there is much at stake. You might have felt the same way. It gets even riskier and more stressful when we have to rely on other people to execute part of the plan, and we feel that they are not as clear in the importance of the task as we are. Sometimes it creates an atmosphere of tension because in our minds, failure is not an option.

When I looked for inspiration or guidance of the how to plan, I looked at the facts of the ministry of Jesus. Have you ever noticed that the ministry of Jesus with his 12 disciples spanned for 18 months? We all know that he was widely visible for three years, but his actual ministry was for this short period of a year and a half. Did you also knew that Jesus never traveled more that 25 miles away from his home? And another fact was that the only recorded ways of transportation he ever employed was the usual boat ride, or the donkey used to enter Jerusalem before he was crucified. No chariots or fancy horses, that was it. Have you ever considered that he did not have any technology as we have today to spread his message? He had no loudspeakers to be heard, yet he was able to speak to thousands of followers at a time. In my mind it is very difficult to grasp, yet it happened. And let us consider the most unusual of the facts about his ministry, his disciples. Many had followed him everywhere, as much as 70 were recorded in the scriptures, but he chose only 12. Twelve ordinary men, with openly known flaws were recruited to carry on his message. Among them we find a tax collector, a doctor and a fisherman. These were his choices? This was his brilliant idea to bring a message of change? Yes, this was Jesus plan, and there was no plan B.

There is much to learned about this, but one refreshing thought comes alive when we consider these facts; we are his plan A and there is no Plan B. When we read the story of who he chosed, we know that they represent who we are. We understand that the story is not about plans or strategies, although they were many, but about his love for us. He purposefully chose those that had all the shortcomings that you and I have to make us understand that with Him all things are possible. When we consider plans, we look at what resources we have so our plan can succeed and we rely on the strength that we have to make things happen. But when God looks at us he sees the possibilities of what we can achieve, not by ourselves but through and with him.

Don’t look at what you have or who you think you are, we are his one and only plan. You and I will succeed, because Jesus has chosen you and me as his plan A. Be encouraged that with him all things are possible, there is no plan B.

No hay plan B

En cualquier esfuerzo o tarea que nos proponemos hacer, nosotros solemos considerar más de una opción. Siempre vemos los posibles resultados podrían ser y tratamos de minimizar el riesgo al tener un “copia de seguridad” plan por así decirlo, por si acaso nuestro primer plan no funciona como pensábamos. Este es un consejo muy práctico y por lo general sigo esta práctica de tener muchas opciones. Pero hay veces que ha estado en situaciones que sólo hay una camino y no otro. Mi enfoque es de gran nitidez y por lo general los niveles de estrés son altos, porque al final sólo hay un plan y tiene que funcionar. Yo sé que cuando estoy en una borrachera, mi forma de ver las cosas es completamente diferente, porque hay mucho en juego. Es posible que te haya sentido igual. Se hace aún riesgoso y estresante cuando tenemos que depender de otras personas para ejecutar parte del plan y nos sentimos que no están tan claros en la importancia de la tarea como somos. A veces crea una atmósfera de tensión debido a que en nuestras mentes, el fracaso no es una opción.

Cuando miré en busca de inspiración o guía de cómo planificar, miró a las circunstancias del ministerio de Jesús. ¿Alguna vez has notado que el ministerio de Jesús con sus 12 discípulos se extendió durante 18 meses? Todos sabemos que fue muy visible durante tres años, pero su ministerio real fue durante este corto periodo de un año y medio. ¿ Sabías que Jesús nunca viajó más de 25 millas de distancia de su casa? Y otro hecho es que las únicas formas de transporte registradas que alguna vez fue empleada por Él fue el habitual paseo en barco, o el pollino utilizado para entrar en Jerusalén antes de ser crucificado. Ningún carruaje o caballos de lujo, eso fue todo. ¿Alguna vez has considerado que no tenía ninguna tecnología que tenemos hoy para difundir su mensaje? No tenía altavoces para ser escuchado, pero fue capaz de hablar a miles de seguidores a la vez. En mi mente, es muy difícil de entender, sin embargo, sucedió. Y vamos a considerar el más inusual de los hechos acerca de su ministerio, sus discípulos. Muchos lo habían seguido a todas partes hasta 70 se registraron en las escrituras, pero escogió sólo a 12. Doce hombres comunes y corrientes, con defectos abiertamente conocidos fueron reclutados continuar su mensaje. Entre ellos nos encontramos con un recaudador de impuestos, un médico y un pescador. ¿Estas fueron sus opciones? ¿Esta era su brillante idea de llevar un mensaje de cambio? Sí, este era el plan de Jesús, y no había plan B.

Hay mucho que aprender sobre esto, pero un pensamiento refrescante cobra vida cuando tenemos en cuenta estos hechos, nosotros somos su plan A y no hay plan B. Cuando leemos la historia de quienes él escogió, sabemos que ellos representan lo que somos . Entendemos que la historia no es acerca de los planes o estrategias, aunque fueron muchas, sino de su amor por nosotros. Él eligió a propósito los que tenían todos los defectos que tú y yo tenemos, para hacernos comprender que con Él todo es posible. Cuando consideramos nuestros planes, nos fijamos en los recursos que tenemos para que así nuestro plan tenga éxito y confiamos en la fortaleza que tenemos que hacer que las cosas sucedan. Pero cuando Dios nos mira ve las posibilidades de lo que podemos lograr, no por nosotros mismos, sino a través y con él.

No mires lo que tienes o quién crees que eres, nosotros somos su singular y único plan. Tú y yo tendremos éxito, porque Jesús te ha escogido a ti ya mí como su plan de A. Anímate que con Él todo es posible, no hay un plan B.
