To move forward, you have to STOP

Life is formulated by dreams and you have a big one. Every time you think about it you get goosebumps. You have all of these plans in your heart and a smile comes to your face when you think about the possibilities. I personally think that’s a good thing.

And then things don’t go as planned. Interruptions, roadblocks and disappointments occur that seem to take the life out of you. It is frustrating, especially when you are a big dreamer. Ever wonder how to pass that point in life where you think you are at the max of your capacity? Its like if someone or something has put a limit or a lid on your life. You know, that moment when you feel stuck professionally and personally? Some in their 40’s and 50’s would refer to it as the midlife crisis, but those in the 20’s and 30’s would say its just depression, bad breaks or simply bad luck. Well, no matter how you might call it, it happens to all of us. We long for meaning, achievement and advancement and everything we do seems to tell us, “That’s it, you got you your capacity level”. Life seems to stop, pause and a sense of emptiness starts to overwhelm us. This is the moment when you might say to yourself, “you have to try harder,” or on the contrary, “face it, it’s not worth it”. I know, confusing conversations and even contradictory ones, that are looking for a reason why things didn’t worked out. These are the conversations you have with yourself in the car, the shower, the beach or the backyard. It is where you talk to God, (well sometimes you are just complaining to Him!) And you ask the question. Why?

I have learned by my own experiences that many of these feelings come from an exhausted body, mind and spirit and nothing more. You feel that you cannot go on, and at the same time you cannot stop. Exhaustion takes over, exhaustion is the boss of you.

So I would suggest to do one thing: Just STOP.

  • Stop what you are doing and take time to eat well, exercise and rest.
    • Many of our emotional and physical exhaustion comes from bad nutrition, poor exercise and little to no rest. We tend to treat a physical problem as a spiritual one when in reality we are so engulfed in “the project” or “the dream” that we neglect the most important ingredient of it; Our body. Take care of yourself, you’ll thank yourself later.
  • Take uninterrupted time to think where you are and where you want to be.
    • Our daily activities can overwhelm us and sometimes we forget why we are doing what we are doing in the first place. A refresher is always healthy for the soul and mind. It has the capacity to create new energy and drive. Quiet time to reflect where we are, those steps that worked and those that didn’t, is important to regroup and refocus. Time to write uninterrupted is a good exercise that will energize your soul and mind. Think frequently.
  • Open your heart and ears to new ideas and learn from them.
    • Sometimes our heart is in the right place but our strategy is not. We need fresh eyes and perspective to learn from those around us and probably to tweak a little our approach. Someone that brings new ideas to the table should always be welcomed. Maybe one word or concept can change everything. Open your heart always.
  • Pray and prepare yourself.
    • Prayer is crucial. After considering all things, pray and prepare. There is nothing more important than to ask for guidance and vision when you have a big dream. After all it will consume most part of your time and resources and it will affect everyone that is around you. Being certain that you are pursuing God’s dream for your life is the most important part of your life. You don’t want to find yourself at the end of your life acknowledging that you chased the wrong path. Look for new resources. Pray and prepare consistently.

Take time to consider this. You might just be exhausted. To move forward, you have to STOP. “BREATHE expectantly, LIVE confidently and MOVE Boldly”

Para seguir adelante, tienes que hacer un PARE

La vida esta formulada por los sueños y tu sueño es grande. Cada vez que lo piensas en el se te eriza la piel. Tienes todos esos planes en tu corazón y una sonrisa aflora en tu rostro cuando piensas en las posibilidades. Personalmente considero que es algo bueno.

Y entonces las cosas no salen según planeado. Interrupciones, bloqueos y decepciones suceden, que parecen sacar la vida de adentro de ti. Es frustrante, especialmente cuando eres un gran soñador. ¿Alguna vez te preguntaste cómo pasar de ese punto en la vida en la que piensas que llegaste al máximo de tu capacidad? Es como si algo o alguien te ha puesto un límite o una tapa en la vida. Ya sabes, ¿ese momento en que te sientes estancado profesional y personalmente? Algunos en sus 40 y 50 se refieren a ello como la crisis de mediana edad, pero los de los 20 y 30 dirían que es sólo depresión, mala racha o simplemente mala suerte. Bueno, no importa cómo podrías llamarlo, nos sucede a todos. Anhelamos sentido, logros y progreso y todo lo que hacemos parece decirnos: “Eso es todo, ya llegaste a tu nivel de capacidad”. La vida parece detenerse, pausar y una sensación de vacío empieza a abrumarnos. Este es el momento en que te podrías decir a ti mismo, “lo que tienes que hacer es esforzarte más”, o por el contrario, “admítelo, no vale la pena”. Lo sé, són conversaciones confusas e incluso contradictorias que solo buscan una razón del por qué las cosas no funcionaron. Estas son las conversaciones que tienes contigo mismo en el auto, la ducha, la playa o el patio. Es donde le hablas a Dios, (¡bueno a veces sólo te quejas con Dios!) y haces la pregunta. ¿Porqué?

He aprendido por mis propias experiencias que muchos de estos sentimientos vienen de un cuerpo, mente y espíritu exhausto, y nada más. Sientes que no puedes seguir, y al mismo tiempo, que no te puedes detenerte. El agotamiento se apodera, el agotamiento es tu dueño.

Así que, te sugiero hacer una cosa: Haz un PARE.

  • Para de hacer lo que estás haciendo y toma tiempo para comer bien, hacer ejercicio y descansar.
    • Gran parte de nuestro agotamiento emocional y físico proviene de una mala nutrición, poco ejercicio y pobre o ningún descanso. Tendemos a tratar un problema físico como uno espiritual, cuando en realidad estamos tan involucrados en el “proyecto” o “el sueño” que descuidamos el ingrediente más importante del mismo, nuestro cuerpo. Cuida de ti mismo, te lo vas a agradecer más tarde.
  • Aparta tiempo sin interrupciones para pensar dónde estás y dónde quieres estar.
    • Nuestras actividades diarias nos pueden abrumar y, a veces nos olvidamos por qué estamos haciendo lo que estamos haciendo en primer lugar. Un repaso siempre es saludable para el alma y la mente. Tiene la capacidad de crear nueva energía y unidad. Tiempo en silencio para reflexionar dónde nos encontramos, los pasos que funcionaron y los que no, es importante para reagruparse y volver a enfocar. Tiempo para escribir sin interrupciones es un buen ejercicio que dará energía a tu alma y tu mente. Aparta tiempo con frecuencia.
  • Resquicia o abre tu corazón y oídos a nuevas ideas y aprende de ellas.
    • A veces nuestro corazón está en el lugar correcto, pero nuestra estrategia no. Necesitamos nuevos ojos y la perspectiva de los que nos rodean para aprender de ellos y, probablemente, para modificar en algo nuestro enfoque. Alguien que aporte nuevas ideas a la mesa siempre debe ser bienvenido. Tal vez una palabra o un concepto puede cambiarlo todo. Abre tu corazón siempre.
  • Enciérrate en oración y prepárate.
    • La oración es crucial. Después de considerar todas las cosas, ora y prepárate. No hay nada más importante que pedir la dirección y visión cuando se tiene un gran sueño. Después de todo, va a consumir la mayor parte de tu tiempo y recursos y que afectará a todo el que te rodea. Estar seguro de que estás llevando a cabo el sueño de Dios es lo más importante para tu vida. No quieres encontrarte a ti mismo al final de la vida reconociendo que perseguiste el camino equivocado. Busca nuevos recursos. Ora y prepárate de forma consistente.

Toma tiempo para considerar esto. Es posible que sólo estás agotado. Para seguir adelante, tienes que hacer un PARE.“RESPIRA con expectación, VIVE con confianza y MUÉVETE con valentía”

Immensely, beautifully and purposefully

“This must be a magnificent Temple because our God is greater than all other gods” – 2 Chronicles 2:5

It was King David who decided to build the temple of God. History reveals that God would not allow it because he was man of war and had shed blood. It was his son Solomon to whom it was given the task of constructing the sanctuary. The plans for all construction, including materials, had been provided by David his father under the explicit direction of God. Solomon would build a temple to remember.

The temple would be immense, beautiful and with purpose. These three characteristics that made this temple be unforgettable, its immensity, its beauty and its purpose, were characteristics that stood out in plain sight. The immensity of the temple meant that the man who contemplated it, remembered his smallness and inspired reverence. Seeing the beauty of the temple, created admiration and was conducive to worship and the temple’s purpose was clearly defined: God would forever dwell in it and his eyes and his heart would always be there. This structure would represent much more for generations to come. Solomon would build more than a temple more, it was a witness that would transcend time.

We all build something, wether we recognize it or not. But very often we settle to build what represents to us the less resistance, regardless of the consequences. We do not measure the implications of what we do. We think that the resources entrusted to us are unimportant. We fail to understand that everything we do is connected and that there are many who depend on the decisions we make today.

How do you handle your finances? What are the goals that you have for your life? What you build with your life, is it immense? Do it declare the greatness of the God whom you serve and proclaim that is Lord of your life? When people look at how you behave and relate, Does your behavior exude greatness and the loftiness of God? When the product of your hand is revealed to the world, does it demonstrates the beauty of God who created all things? What you build in your family, your job, Does it reveal the purpose of God in your life? What do people associate your name with? With the immense, with the beautiful and the purpose of a full life?

I know first hand that these are not easy questions to answer. But I firmly believe that it is time for these questions to be a catalyst to thrust you into a new direction. To give you a new sense of inspiration and help you understand that you were created for much more in life than just to exist. David states that were crowned with glory and honor. Let us live at the level for which we were created.

Build immensely, beautifully and purposefully.

Inmenso, hermoso y con propósito

“Este tendrá que ser un templo magnífico porque nuestro Dios es más grande que todos los demás dioses;” – 2 Crónicas 2:5

Fue el rey David quien decidió que había que edificar el templo de Dios. La historia revela que Dios no le permitió hacerlo porque era hombre de guerra y había derramado mucha sangre. Fue su hijo Salomón a quien le fue dada la tarea de construir el santuario. Los planos para toda la construcción, incluyendo los materiales, ya habían sido provistos por David su padre bajo la dirección explícita de Dios. Salomón construiría, un templo inolvidable.

  1. El templo sería inmenso, hermoso y con propósito. Esto tres rasgos que hacían que este templo fuese inolvidable su inmensidad, su hermosura y su propósito eran características que sobresaltaban a simple vista. La inmensidad del templo hacía que el hombre que lo contemplara, recordara su pequeñez y lo inspirara a la reverencia. Al ver la hermosura del templo, creaba admiración que era conducente a la adoración y el propósito del templo estaba claramente definido: Dios habitaría por siempre en él y sus ojos y su corazón estarían siempre allí. Esta seria una estructura que representaría mucho mas para las generaciones que venideras. Salomón construiría mas que un templo, establecería un testimonio que trascendería los tiempos.

Todos construimos algo, lo reconozcamos o no. Pero muchas veces nos conformamos a construir lo que nos represente menos resistencia sin importar las consecuencias. No medimos las implicaciones de lo que hacemos. Pensamos que los recursos que se nos han encomendado no tienen importancia. Fallamos en entender que todo lo que hacemos está conectado. Que hay muchos que dependen de las decisiones que hagamos hoy.

¿Cómo manejas tus finanzas? ¿Cuáles son las metas que tienes para tu vida? ¿Lo que construyes con tu vida, es inmenso? ¿Declara la grandeza del Dios a quien sirves y proclamas que es Señor de tu vida? Cuando la gente mira como te conduces y relacionas, ¿Exuda tu comportamiento la grandeza y la altura de Dios? Cuando el producto de tus manos es revelado al mundo, ¿demuestra la hermosura del Dios que creó todas las cosas? Lo que construyes en tu familia, en tu trabajo ¿revela el propósito en tu vida del Dios a quien sirves? ¿Revela tu vida un propósito definido? ¿Con qué asocian tu nombre? ¿Con lo inmenso, con lo hermoso y con el propósito de una vida plena?

Sé de primera mano que no son preguntas fáciles de contestar. Pero creo firmemente que es momento de que estas preguntas sean un catalítico para impulsarte en una nueva dirección. Para darte un nuevo sentido de inspiración, y te ayuden a entender que fuiste creado para mucho más en esta vida que meramente existir. David declara que fuimos coronados de honra y de gloria. Vivamos a la altura para la que fuimos creados.

Que lo que construyas, sea inmenso, hermoso y con propósito.

While we wait

Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled. Romans 15:4 NLT

A friend of mine who had recently relocated to another country, was seeking for a job in order to also relocate his family. Being alone for some time and going from job interview to job interview with no results to show, had started to make his uneasiness grow. Not that he had been idle, in fact he was getting up early every day and doing his part. He had made a plan and put it to action, counted his resources, and made provision. For him, this was a move like no other one he had done before. Him moving was not prompted by his desire, but he was certain that it was directed by The Master. He had a promise, and God always fulfills his promises.

So why he had not seen any results? No offers, no glimmer of hope. While he was being faithful and waited, his available resources were being depleted. He had calculated the time it would take exhaust them, and that time was close. And then his wife told him that she was also “all in”, and went on to quit her job and told him so. God had given them a promise and she believed it.

One of those “waiting days”, we had the chance to chat early in the morning and this issue came up. We exchanged some comments and then he said, “I’m waiting, waiting”. I could sense some frustration about the process in his comments, so I reminded him about this scripture, “…as we wait patiently…”.

Paul exhorted the Romans as to how to live and care for those that were among them. Had been telling them how to conduct themselves and why and apparently there were some among them that had been having some trouble and their patience was running slim when it came to considering their brothers and encouraging them. Then this verse comes in the middle of all his instructions and summarizes his teaching and seals the truth about God’s character. God cannot die, lie, be fooled or stop loving us.

Everything that is written in the scriptures is there to give us hope and encouragement, while we wait for the promises of God to be fulfilled in our life and on the lives of those around us. Paul with this verse is stating that the promises of God are not to be doubted or questioned, but to be expected. We live on promises not explanations. Just as the romans had troubles, tribulations and issues, we have our share of situations, but no situation will ever be as tangible as promise made by God.

Back to my friend. Just a couple of days later he received not one, but several job offers at the same time, and his problem now was to decide which one to accept. At the time of this writing, his family is traveling to meet him, their promise came to pass and their new journey begins.

Do not despair, do not be anxious, his promises are true and while we wait we should delve into his word to be filled with hope, encouragement and instruction. They were written long time ago to prepare you for your next assignment, and the process will help you grow into the man and women that God intended you to be. And all of this will happen, while we wait.

Mientras esperamos

Tales cosas se escribieron hace tiempo en las Escrituras para que nos sirvan de enseñanza. Y las Escrituras nos dan esperanza y ánimo mientras esperamos con paciencia hasta que se cumplan las promesas de Dios. Romanos 15:4 NTV

Un amigo que recientemente se trasladó a otro país, había estado buscando empleo con el fin de trasladar también a su familia. El estar solo por algún tiempo y el ir de entrevista a entrevista sin ningún resultado, comenzó a hacer que su inquietud aumentara. No es que él hubiera estado inactivo. De hecho se levantaba temprano todos los días y hacía su parte. Tenía un plan el cual puso en acción. Contó sus recursos e hizo provisión. Para él, éste era un paso como ninguno que hubiese hecho antes. Su movida no fue motivada por su deseo, él estaba seguro de que fue dirigido por el Maestro. Había una promesa, y Dios siempre cumple sus promesas.

Entonces, ¿por qué no había visto ningún resultado? No había ninguna oferta, ningún atisbo de esperanza. Mientras se mantenía fiel y esperaba, los recursos disponibles que tenía, se agotaban. Había calculado el tiempo hasta donde esos recursos llegarían, y ese tiempo estaba muy cerca. Y entonces su esposa le dijo que ella también estaba “totalmente comprometida,” y fue y renunció a su trabajo, y así se lo comunicó. Dios les había dado una promesa y ella la creía.

Uno de esos “días de espera,” tuvimos la oportunidad de charlar temprano en la mañana y este tema surgió. Habíamos intercambiado algunos comentarios y luego dijo: “Estoy esperando, esperando.” Pude percibir cierta frustración sobre el proceso se manifestaba en sus comentarios así que le recordé acerca de esta escritura, “…mientras esperamos con paciencia…”

Pablo exhortó a los romanos en cuanto a cómo vivir y cuidar de aquellos que estaban entre ellos. Les había dicho cómo debían conducirse y por qué y al parecer, había algunos entre ellos que habían tenido algunos problemas y probablemente su paciencia se estaba agotando cuando se trataba de considerar a los hermanos y el alentarlos. Entonces  este versículo se presenta en el centro de todas sus instrucciones, resume su enseñanza y sella la verdad sobre el carácter de Dios. Dios no puede morir, mentir, ser engañado o dejar de amarnos.

Todo lo que está escrito en las Escrituras está ahí para darnos esperanza y aliento mientras esperamos que las promesas de Dios se cumplan en nuestras vidas y en las vidas de quienes nos rodean. Pablo, con este versículo, está afirmando que las promesas de Dios no se dudan o se cuestionan, sino que se esperan. Vivimos sobre promesas no sobre explicaciones. Tal como los romanos tenían problemas, tribulaciones y situaciones, nosotros también tenemos las nuestras, pero ninguna situación será tan tangible como una promesa hecha por Dios.

De vuelta a mi amigo. Sólo un par de días después recibió no una, sino varias ofertas de empleo al mismo tiempo, y su problema ahora era decidir cuál elegir. Al momento de este escrito, su familia viaja a su encuentro, su promesa se cumplió y su nueva jornada comienza.

No te desesperes, no te ansíes, sus promesas son verdaderas y mientras esperamos, debemos profundizar en su palabra que nos llena de esperanza, aliento e instrucción. Fueron escritas mucho tiempo atrás para prepararte para tu próxima misión, y el proceso te ayudará a crecer en el hombre y la mujer que Dios quiere que seas. Y todo esto ha de pasar, mientras esperamos.

There is no plan B

Then he appointed twelve of them and called them his apostles. They were to accompany him, and he would send them out to preach – Mark 3:14

On any endeavor or task we set ourselves to do, we usually consider more than one option. We always see what the possible outcomes could be and we try to minimize the risk by having a “backup” plan so to say, just in case our first plan does not work as we thought. This is very practical advice and I usually follow this practice of having many options. But there are times I have been in that there is only one way and no other. My focus is razor sharp and usually stress levels are high, because in the end there is only one plan and it has to work. I know that when I am in a crossroad, the way I see things is completely different because there is much at stake. You might have felt the same way. It gets even riskier and more stressful when we have to rely on other people to execute part of the plan, and we feel that they are not as clear in the importance of the task as we are. Sometimes it creates an atmosphere of tension because in our minds, failure is not an option.

When I looked for inspiration or guidance of the how to plan, I looked at the facts of the ministry of Jesus. Have you ever noticed that the ministry of Jesus with his 12 disciples spanned for 18 months? We all know that he was widely visible for three years, but his actual ministry was for this short period of a year and a half. Did you also knew that Jesus never traveled more that 25 miles away from his home? And another fact was that the only recorded ways of transportation he ever employed was the usual boat ride, or the donkey used to enter Jerusalem before he was crucified. No chariots or fancy horses, that was it. Have you ever considered that he did not have any technology as we have today to spread his message? He had no loudspeakers to be heard, yet he was able to speak to thousands of followers at a time. In my mind it is very difficult to grasp, yet it happened. And let us consider the most unusual of the facts about his ministry, his disciples. Many had followed him everywhere, as much as 70 were recorded in the scriptures, but he chose only 12. Twelve ordinary men, with openly known flaws were recruited to carry on his message. Among them we find a tax collector, a doctor and a fisherman. These were his choices? This was his brilliant idea to bring a message of change? Yes, this was Jesus plan, and there was no plan B.

There is much to learned about this, but one refreshing thought comes alive when we consider these facts; we are his plan A and there is no Plan B. When we read the story of who he chosed, we know that they represent who we are. We understand that the story is not about plans or strategies, although they were many, but about his love for us. He purposefully chose those that had all the shortcomings that you and I have to make us understand that with Him all things are possible. When we consider plans, we look at what resources we have so our plan can succeed and we rely on the strength that we have to make things happen. But when God looks at us he sees the possibilities of what we can achieve, not by ourselves but through and with him.

Don’t look at what you have or who you think you are, we are his one and only plan. You and I will succeed, because Jesus has chosen you and me as his plan A. Be encouraged that with him all things are possible, there is no plan B.

No hay plan B

En cualquier esfuerzo o tarea que nos proponemos hacer, nosotros solemos considerar más de una opción. Siempre vemos los posibles resultados podrían ser y tratamos de minimizar el riesgo al tener un “copia de seguridad” plan por así decirlo, por si acaso nuestro primer plan no funciona como pensábamos. Este es un consejo muy práctico y por lo general sigo esta práctica de tener muchas opciones. Pero hay veces que ha estado en situaciones que sólo hay una camino y no otro. Mi enfoque es de gran nitidez y por lo general los niveles de estrés son altos, porque al final sólo hay un plan y tiene que funcionar. Yo sé que cuando estoy en una borrachera, mi forma de ver las cosas es completamente diferente, porque hay mucho en juego. Es posible que te haya sentido igual. Se hace aún riesgoso y estresante cuando tenemos que depender de otras personas para ejecutar parte del plan y nos sentimos que no están tan claros en la importancia de la tarea como somos. A veces crea una atmósfera de tensión debido a que en nuestras mentes, el fracaso no es una opción.

Cuando miré en busca de inspiración o guía de cómo planificar, miró a las circunstancias del ministerio de Jesús. ¿Alguna vez has notado que el ministerio de Jesús con sus 12 discípulos se extendió durante 18 meses? Todos sabemos que fue muy visible durante tres años, pero su ministerio real fue durante este corto periodo de un año y medio. ¿ Sabías que Jesús nunca viajó más de 25 millas de distancia de su casa? Y otro hecho es que las únicas formas de transporte registradas que alguna vez fue empleada por Él fue el habitual paseo en barco, o el pollino utilizado para entrar en Jerusalén antes de ser crucificado. Ningún carruaje o caballos de lujo, eso fue todo. ¿Alguna vez has considerado que no tenía ninguna tecnología que tenemos hoy para difundir su mensaje? No tenía altavoces para ser escuchado, pero fue capaz de hablar a miles de seguidores a la vez. En mi mente, es muy difícil de entender, sin embargo, sucedió. Y vamos a considerar el más inusual de los hechos acerca de su ministerio, sus discípulos. Muchos lo habían seguido a todas partes hasta 70 se registraron en las escrituras, pero escogió sólo a 12. Doce hombres comunes y corrientes, con defectos abiertamente conocidos fueron reclutados continuar su mensaje. Entre ellos nos encontramos con un recaudador de impuestos, un médico y un pescador. ¿Estas fueron sus opciones? ¿Esta era su brillante idea de llevar un mensaje de cambio? Sí, este era el plan de Jesús, y no había plan B.

Hay mucho que aprender sobre esto, pero un pensamiento refrescante cobra vida cuando tenemos en cuenta estos hechos, nosotros somos su plan A y no hay plan B. Cuando leemos la historia de quienes él escogió, sabemos que ellos representan lo que somos . Entendemos que la historia no es acerca de los planes o estrategias, aunque fueron muchas, sino de su amor por nosotros. Él eligió a propósito los que tenían todos los defectos que tú y yo tenemos, para hacernos comprender que con Él todo es posible. Cuando consideramos nuestros planes, nos fijamos en los recursos que tenemos para que así nuestro plan tenga éxito y confiamos en la fortaleza que tenemos que hacer que las cosas sucedan. Pero cuando Dios nos mira ve las posibilidades de lo que podemos lograr, no por nosotros mismos, sino a través y con él.

No mires lo que tienes o quién crees que eres, nosotros somos su singular y único plan. Tú y yo tendremos éxito, porque Jesús te ha escogido a ti ya mí como su plan de A. Anímate que con Él todo es posible, no hay un plan B.
